Norton Ghost

Perhaps one of the members can explain this to me. I have a system with a 550mhz AMD cpu and 256K of ram running XP Pro that I use for word processing and some other things. I decided to make an image of the HD for backup using Norton Ghost. The system has a 12x Sony CD-RW.

I started the image and the system was burning at over 200mb/min. This rate deteriorated to 60mb/min before I got disgusted and shut the copy down. Any ideas why this happened and how this slow down of copy speed can be prevented?

I do not think you can control that. You can remove all the programs that you do not use to make sure you have as much ram as possible to do this.

You might even be able to do this in safe mode which might work out as well.

I recentlly made an image with ghost and from 500MB/min, it drop to 120MB/sec.
Don't remember if the manual or the tutorials mentioned that XX (don't remember) rate of MB/min is the average, so I made my calculations and turned out to be a 1 hour backup. So when I began the backing up and said 500MB/min I was impressed, but little by little it went down, until 120. It did finish in 1 hour

Thanks for the replys but the question remains why does the burn rate degrade so much. All the program does is copy a compressed version of the partition to a CDR. The compression surely doesn't take that much time and the time cost of compression shouldn't increase as the process of the burn continues.

The CPU and the OS could be doing anything it wants to while that process is working and that could be a reason why your spped goes down.

Create a Norton Ghost boot floppy with the provided Wizard. Whenever making an Image of an HD or partition you should do so in DOS. This might speed up the burn too.

I made my backup with PC-DOS, not MS-dos and it took 1 hour

When you select the partition you want to image the system reboots and restarts in PC Dos. That is the system that is used when the image is being made.
