Swapped too many items, XP wont go

firstly it says that it hadnt started correctly and then it says that it could be due to hardware change and somepother things. the thing is my cpu graphics card and mobo died in one shot, so i got all the new things but i have still the old drivers on my hdd, but icant change them because i cant get in. the screen of death gives this error


stop: 0x0000007b and then some numbers brackets what is the problem?

Chances are that you are better off re-formatting your C: partition and re-installing the Windows.

its XP's activation being a... bad piece of stupid controlling software thats sucks... yea

If it was an activation issue, Windows would boot but tell you that you need to reactivate.

I'd be willing to wager that your new motherboard has a different chipset than your old one, and your old mobo & disk controller drivers are crashing the system when they attempt to initialize with the new hardware. You might be able to get away with installing Windows over itself to see if you can get the right drivers installed. If you're not worried about losing data, though, I'd recommend a reformat and reinstallation.

Reformat. Put the hard drive in as a slave into another computer and copy the data you need if you have any. After a change in hardware of that magnitude...reformat!:)

If you changed your motherboard to a different one you will probably have to reinstall XP.

i cant reformat it says media type error or something like that. i read on microcraps site that it is the old hhd controller messing around as Skydog said. also if try and reinstall it says disk error somehting..

Get the driver for your new motherboard's disk controller on a floppy disk. Boot to the Windows CD and as soon as you see the blue-screen portion of setup, press F6 whether you see a prompt or not. You should then be prompted to install additional mass storage device drivers, which you can load from floppy by following the directions on-screen.

I would do as SkyDog initially said. Reformat. It is generally best after doing a new motherboard install. I have had success without reformatiing but only once or twice. I always reformat now. I just feel my system runs better with the fresh install. And then if you don't do the reformat and you do have problems, you have wasted that time. If you can't boot to the cd to reformat, do you have an old boot floppy from win 98 or me? I use those to reformat. Or if you have a Seagate floppy that will allow you to format and partition your drive that should work.

WAAAIT! Don't format. Try this:

Boot with your XP CD, and then run chkdsk (Check Disk) it should fix any errors, and i've had success with using it twice to help me get my XP running again (Both counts, I got the Blue Screen of Death after the black startup screen with the Microsoft logo and the blue load indicator bar.

i have tried htat check disk thing but icant get it to work with my xp cd. how must i type it so that it will work? will it work with Win 98?

I doubt it will work with XP. Better tools is one of the benefits of XP.

Now, the command is called "chkdsk" I think, and you have to access it through the recovery console.

You know how to boot from the CD of course. You do that, and before the XP Setup gives you the screen for Installation Choices, it will say something like, "Press R to activate Recovery Console", press R at the appropriate moment, and you'll be dumped into a DOS/Command Prompt, type chkdsk there.

okay what i did was just get a new hdd . INSTALLED Xp and then hooked up my evil HDD as slave and voila, it wokred . so it must have been the software gltich
