sata, eh?

I just got my nf7-s mobo in today, and I have no idea what serial ata is.....Now, my newest hard drive is a WD 80gb 8mb buffer 7200rpm (ata100), would I have increased hard drive performance by hooking up the sata converter to my the serial connector on my mobo? Sorry if this is obvious, but I have no idea what sata is or how it works. Maybe I could look this up on the world wide web...........nah, im too lazy :D :D :D

Depending on what usage and the 8mb cache appears to work very well with SATA. Some apps will be slightly slower

for the bad news- there seems to have been more than a few problems with data coruption with SATA - more pronounced in early versions of the NF7-S board. The data problems seems more prevelant in overclocked systems although there does not seem to be a reason why that should happen. The smart guys here might be able to help with that

Well, I have the version 2 of the board, so I dont know if that makes a diff with sata, and I do plan on OC'ing.....I will be using my 7200rpm drive for my music software, so I need to keep it fast. Sounds like my best/safest bet would be to just hook it up to the ide connector then, huh?

Well, I quess we'll have to agree to disagree! :) I've been using the WD Raptor on the SATA IDE port on my mobo since a fresh install of WinXP was completed about a month ago. Not a hint of a problem (Asus P4C800 Deluxe) either performance-wise or any data corruption. And I mildly OC both my CPU and vid card on a continuous basis. My Sandra HD bench when from about 26k to 37K using the Raptor over a 7200 spin Maxtor D740X.
Also, for most users, 8mb vs 2mb of disk cache doesn't play into the equation (the typical user just doesn't exploit disk cache and most benchmarking tools over-emphasize disk cache performance). The ONLY advantage my Raptor has over a PATA HD is that it has nearly double the avg. data transfer rate and nearly half the avg. seek time over PATA IDE HDs. It also can do nearly 150mb on a cache hit on the rare occasion it happens.

omg, I was just researching sata drives and that wd 10000rpm 36gb looks awesome!!! I WANT ONE!!!!!
