Floppy Drive Mayhem

Is it possible that a bad motherboard could fry a floppy drive? I know, that sounds bad from the get go; well, it is! I just built a system for my sister using an ASUS A7V8X. Everything works wonderfully except no matter what floppy drive I put in it, they don't work. Now, I have no actual intention of grabbing the floppy out of my own computer to test it, b/c so far I've maybe killed 4. I grabbed one and I tried it without success. As result, I ordered two more. I put one in, and I thought it worked. I popped a floppy in and files showed up on the screen... everything seemed cool until my sister called me and said, "hey, the files show up but when I click on them they don't open. I'd hate to think this was because of the mobo... :mad:

I really doubt this is a mobo problem since she can view the files that are stored on the diskette, which means that the mobo is communicating with the drive...

As for what the problem is, it is really hard to say!

Try a different cable. A bad floppy cable can do some weird things.

Try installing disk controller drivers during Windows installation without one. Windows setup expects to see 'em on floppy and won't take them from any drive other than A:.

I've experienced similar problems and was pulling my hair out until I discovered it was a bad floppy drive controller on the mainboard.:(

OKay, I've tested all four drives and they're still good. So, that means it is either the ribbon cable or the mobo. Please don't let it be the motherboard! If it isn't the cable, is it possible it might be the bios? I remember the screen being a little weird when i first booted into the BIOS. The question is, if that is possible, how do I flash the BIOS without an A drive? Humph.
