AGAIN :) Cheap Duali is here and in I875

well I think the future is here now and dirt cheap

this new mobo from ASUS has it all a Dual XEON with everything including i875 chipset

this mobo costs 250$ only and accepts one or two processors, add to it 333DDRAM..

which means bye bye for single mobos forever

what do u think? no flames plz

Please read the specs it has everything from fw to sata to gblan and it is ATX...

I wonder why bother getting a normal P4 now NOW the only difference is 800FSB VS 533 FSB and ddr400x2vs ddr333x2 which is REALLY nothing compared to a real Dual system at the same price (the xeons prices r very close to P4 now at the same speed)

the future is dual and u ll see it

and hey it is overclockable too

I think getting duallies is a very good investment. My friend raves about his dual 2Ghz P4s, and he runs a 2.6C on the side. The unicpu box just doesn't compare. Again this is all from what my friend told me.

maybe a difference of $100 for a mobo is not reason enough for someone to go dual, beside the price for Xeon (in case it uses xeon instead of p4)

u dont get it
in the past a dual mobo was around 400$
and it was empty of options
add to it Eatx form not ATX which means big case another high priced psu etc

now u can have the same P4 features in a duali for 250$ thats dirt cheap for a duali system

also, the xeons prices r very near to the P4 not that much difference

the 2.4 xeon is around 200$ now
the 2.66 xeon is 300$
check the prices

but can you overclock it?

P4's are not dual capable.

The current proc prices are $690 each for a Xeon 3.06 w/1MB cache and $455 each for a Xeon 3.06 w/512KB cache. Even with a less expensive mobo, the price of admission is still quite high.

Plus, this may sound stupid, but when you pay the 600 dollars for the 3.06 or even say 200 for the 2.4.... isnt that just for one of the processors. So really it would be 400 dollars for the 2.4, 600 for the 2.6 and well over 1000 for the 3.06?

Your understanding is correct.

Most benchmarks of the i875 show the 800MHz FSB coupled with PC3200 as being a big reason why it performs so well. When running the i875 at 533Mhz it's not that impressive. Maybe DP will help out, but for many users I think they would be better served with a 3.0 or 3.2GHz P4 than a DP Xeon.

AFIK The Xeon chipset is not the same as the i875 chipset in a P4. In addition the Xeon 3.06 with a 1 megabyte cache provides a 15% performance over the older Xeon 3.06 with a 512 kilobyte cache.

Most of the benefits of a dual system are not directly related to raw power. For example a simple print job can cripple the fastest uniprocessor box while a dual box keeps on working. Why? The print spooler is a pig and has priority to boot.

**edit** a quick check of the 82875P chipset specs at Intel reveals that it can only support one processor.

Do you guys think that for most home users a dual cpu setup is overkill? I have never used one so I don't know but I have heard their performance increase is not that great in games or everyday applications.

Also, I would not consider $250 US (so like $350 CAD for me) for a motherboard dirt cheap. These systems, when you add a couple nice processors to that $250, are very high cost.

My workstation mobo was over $900 when it was a bleeding edge product as are most server and workstation mobos.

The Asus dual board is very cheap for a dual board because it lacks most of the features of a server board except the dual proc capability. It lacks pci-x bus, 64 bit pci bus, 32 bit 66MHz pci bus, ECC memory, SCSI, ...

This board is clearly for the consumer market. It is not a server board and its price and features should be compared to other consumer boards. As such it is quite expensive.

I also wouldnt call it a server board.. More like a lowend Workstation board...
