System32.exe?????

Ok I'm getting upset.

I have Windows XP SP-1, I have and always had System32.exe on my system. As a matter of fact it always appeared in my task manager processes list.

Now here's the deal, I havn't ran any virus scanners in about 2 months. So today I do.

Ends up my System32.exe file is infected, so I go into safe mode and remove System32.exe.

As of now, I have no more infections or viruses on this system.

HOWEVER, every time I boot up into windows I get a message saying C:\Windows\System\System32.exe the file cannot be found.

"Of course, it can't be found" I say, I just removed it. So since I don't have the file I asked a friend who also uses XP Pro SP-1 for the file, but turns out HE DOESNT EVEN HAVE THE FILE.

Also, I ask another friend, he says, "XP doesn't have System32.exe"

So my question is, why the hell did I always have a System32.exe file, and how come after I removed it Windows keeps asking for it? I OBVIOUSLY NEEDED THIS FILE FOR SOME REASON!

WHAT THE HELL IS THIS FILE FOR? DO I NEED IT? I would like to somehow restore this file back onto my comp so I can resolve this error message, BUT IT SEEMS EVERYONE WITH WINDOWS XP DOESNT HAVE THIS FILE!

What the HELL is this file for? And if what my friend says is true, then why the hell do I have this file in XP but NOOOO one else has one?

What is this file for?

Nevermind. I found a cure for the problem.

Seems it was related to the virus ssbot widely populating IRC channels.

I had the same problem in windows XP due to the virus "backdoor.ssbot" some kind
of irc virus anyway after deleting the file it came up with the error message that
it could not find the syxtem32.exe file. Here is how I fixed the problem.

1. go to start-run-regedit.

2. do a search for system32.exe and you should find one that is in a catagory on
the right hand side that says SHELL explorer.exe "system32.exe"

3. edit that string just so it says explorer.exe and then exit regedit and reboot
the machine.

*******IMPORTANT**********

BEFORE EDITING THE REGISTRY YOU SHOULD ALWAYS BACK IT UP JUST IN CASE SOMETHING GOES
WRONG!!!!

I recall reading somewhere that the System32.exe file is a virus that has a systemy file name to disguise itself.

I agree with m316foley - IRC is only as dangerous as the person at the keyboard. If you accept file transfers from anybody and everybody on IRC, you're going to get burned.

If you accept file transfers from anybody and everybody while on IRC and don't even bother to scan them with an up-to-date AV program before you open them, you're really going to get burned.

I never did this, in fact I hardly ever use IRC, and if I do its to chat ONLY.

I never use the program anyways, I think I used it a total of 5 times and it was to chat in some channel.

I don't use any software that allows others so much power that they can kick you off for whatever reason. I was once booted off IRC because my newly chosen user name was being used by someone's friend. I was told to come back when I changed my user name. I never went back. Uninstalled it. A bit too juvenile for me.

I don't think most of you begin to understand the depth of IRC. Sure, there's childish channels with stupid ops, but that's true of any wide spread technology. There are forums that run the same software as these ones with idiot mods that will delete posts, etc. on whims--does that mean you don't go to forums entirely? There is a wealth of things on IRC--from chat, to files, to interactive internet broadcasts. It's certainly a remarkably wide-spread technology. Did you ever stop to think about why it's used so widely?

EDIT: Just reread the last post--it's funny because the forum software you are utilizing right now does grant others the power to kick you for whatever reason they might choose.

True you can be "kicked" from anywhere by anyone including your ISP. But most Internet environment have rules or a code of conduct and as long as you are in compliance you are allowed to stay. I have never been "kicked" from anywhere else.
But in the IRC environment the INMATES are running the ASYLUM. No formal rule or code of conduct so they can do with you as they please and change the rules on a whim as they go along. Since this environment does not have a lock on technology or information, then I'll just get mine somewhere else (preferably in a more controlled environment).

GHETTO is an accurate description if you ask me.

While I 'd agree this is an accurate description of many of the servers and channels available, there are a lot of good ones out there. Most, if not all, the channels I visit have a formal set of rules in addition to the rules set forth by the server administration. While, I'm not likely to come back to a channel where a 10 year old op kicked me because he didn't like the 'i' in my name, there are plenty better. I think that the inmates running the asylum is a good analogy though. It allows anybody to create an area that they control--which obviously can be a bad thing with the flux of incompetence presences around the internet today. However, there are a few diamonds if you dig through all the crap.

IRC is mostly good, you've just got to find the right channels. And when you do, there are some very interesting discussions and applications. I kind of like the ways that the ops system works coz when you get a decent operator, it does make the conversation work a lot better.
