I just got done putting together my first syetem. ( other have been store bought) I was looking in my bios and noticed my CPU temps were around 56c. My CPU is a P4 2.6g 800mhz FSB with stock heat sink and fan. After bumbing the speed up to 2.9g it only went up just 2c. Are these temps hot or is this normal for the cpu?
Those temps are rather high... Is that IDLE temps or after a few hours of gaming or something else?

You said BIOS of 56c... I would check to see if the fan is spinning and maybe get some more case fans...
That is rather hot for IDLE... What kind of temps do you have inside your home or location? Ambient temps?
Yeah that after having it on for a few hours with but not gaming.
My temps are:
system 26c
CPU 54c
PWM 35c
My CPU fan is running at around 2850rpms. My room is around 76f. Could my bios be not showing the right temps?

Strange thing is my CPU heatsink is cool to when I touch it. At 56c sound the heatsink be hot?
Abit boards read temps about 15C on the high side on average. I have a thermal probe on my setup and it reads 32C. The Abit temp in the Bios reads 47C. Go to the Abit forums and you will see tons of posts about temp problems.
Do you have the latest ABIT BIOS, I do know that some IC7 series boards do read the temp wrong...
I know that 82c is hot (had a P4 at that for a brief moment :D)

I would try to reseat the heatsink... Maybe a corner is sticking up.. I have seen it happen before...
Also download the latest BIOS and flash it if you do not have the latest..
No the bios is the way it came. Just got it up and running and everything seemed fine so I didnt flash the bios. I'll try that ans see what happens. With temps that hot the heatsink should be hot right? maybe like you said its not on good. Going to get a fan controller with temp monitor next when pick what one to get.
It wouldnt be burning your finger... But it would feel slightly warm... But you might only notice it closer to the die then touching the outskirts of the heatsink :)
Like I said, the BIOS update might fix some temp issues... But it also might fix or help with the memory performance :) (depends on what version of the BIOS it was shipped with)...
the newest BIOS is always good to have, but I will tell you when I flashed mine it didn't help the temp inaccuricies at all. If your rig is too hot you will know it. It's gonna get errors and it will reboot radomly and what not. As long as it's stable and you know your heat sink is seated properly, I wouldn't worry.
Everything seem stable. No lock up yet even after 2hours of gamming. Thx very much for your help guys. And to think if I never found this site my choice was a dell or an hp at bestbuy.:D I have learned alot from this site already.

I do think Dell is rather decent for what they are... But nothing beats a homegrown system!
Out of curiousity, have you tried running the Hardware Doctor (Winbond software) that comes with the board? My temps on HW Doctor are far lower than the BIOS temps.
in case temps do increase and you get stability problems...then I would reseat the heatsink...and because the heatsink isn't warm to the touch that might not be a good thing...if a heatsink is warm then it's doing it's job...but it's if cool then it might not be making good contact...
That what I was thinking. I did reseat it but still stays pretty cool to the touch. I'm now using speed fan to check my temps. With speed fan the temps run about 10c cooler then my bios shows. Everything seem stable and I have it oc @ 3.02g. I'm hoping it was just bad reading from my bios.Quote:
