I finally got my new mobo and installed the Athlon 1.4 GHz CPU and HSF with Arctic Silver II thermal compound. The CPU seems to be running a bit hot at 134 degrees fahrenheit or 57 degrees celsius. What's with that? do 1.4s run that hot? I was planning on overclocking.. will it be a problem? I have a 6500 RPM HSF in there as well.

I know mine runs at about 45C *slightly o/c'ed* and i dont' have any thermal compound, so i dunno what's up with your temps...are you sure u have the hs/f properly seated so forth? cuz that might affect it *that goes for the same with the thermal compound*
u might want to add some fans for intake cuz i know i have a 68cfm delta fan as an intake and many exhaust fans also to help me cool it down https://www.sharkyforums.com/images/.../2005/06/5.gif

That sounds unusually warm, even for a proc as fast as the 1.4. Anything really obstructing the airflow in your case? And I'm not trying to make ya look like a dummy or anything :-) but I have to ask if you're sure that the HSF is making the right contact with the core? Generally a temperature that high has something to do with poor airflow or something incorrect with the compound or the HSF...Quote:

Yes, I think I may have messed up when I put the heat sink on.. I tried one direction and it didn't quite fit so I turned it around, but it had already made contact with the thermal grease.. I am going to redo it and see if it improves.

I turned the HSF around, definitely was backwards :P but that did absolutely nothing. My cpu is still that hot. ***? this really sucks.. there is nothing obstructing. My chassis fan is 81 degrees fahrenheit though, could that be the problem?
now Ive seen it at 138 degrees! damn!

For comparisons sake, my XP system has a chassis temp of 82F and a CPU temp of 100F right now...and I even have the thing open. So your chassis temp is definitely ok...

i heard that it also depends on the motherboard.. the ASUs K7 mobos report higher temps then other mobos.

OK.. I contacted AMD just now and they say that my temp is average. And that the 1.4 range idle anywhere from 40-70 degrees celsius but can go up to 95 degrees celsius without any problems. Aparently the 1.4 is just a very hot CPU https://www.sharkyforums.com/images/.../2005/06/5.gif

I had the same type of problem with the first and LAST Orb that I bought. The temps were just to high and I think yours are too. My problem was the contact between the heatsink and the core of the CPU was not flat and there was no way that I could get the sorry clip to keep the heatsink flat against the core of the processor.
Look at the Thermaltake web site and read the install instructions for the Orb. Pay particular attention to the part where it says NOT to put any force on the heatsink when you install it. If you hold the heatsink down it will not be flat against the core.
If all else fails I would suggest that you get yourself an Alpha 8045 heat sink with the 80MM high output fan. I have one on a XP1800 and the temps seldom get above 100F.
You will be forced to remove the motherboard to install the heatsink but the effort is certainly worth it. The best price I could find was from http://www.2cooltek.com

Not really... Look at mine, I'm using the Arctic Silver II compound as well with the Alpha Fan on my Athlon XP 1600+ (1.4 Ghz).

Of course the Alpha PAL8045 is probably a good reason why the temp is so low - take a look at the comparisons in Anandtech or Toms Hardware. You'll see that the heatsink has a lot to do with lowering the temp, and the from there a decent fan.

the AMD Athlon 1.4Ghz run hotter then most CPUs. It has to do with the CPU core. the 1.4Ghz are not good overclockers due to heat problems. make sure that you have good case Fans, at least 3-4. and a good heatsink..

I don't really put much faith into what AMD tech support told you, Gladius.
Max temp of 95 C only means AMD will guarantee your chip won't turn into a black piece of coal until you hit at least 96C https://www.sharkyforums.com/images/.../2005/06/5.gif
Usually the average temps of a well cooled system (in your GHz range) is in the 40s.
A few people on sharkyforums admit to 50s and a few gloat about 30s.
Was that 57 idle or under load? (idle be hot hot hot)
What size is your case? How many fans?
How fast is your CPU fan?
Ever try using another monitoring program (I use motherboard monitor 5 myself)?

Yeah I had an Orb come with my machine when I bought it. 3 months later the Orb died and My 1GHZ T-Bird fried. Took the machine back to the store and the guy opened the case took the Orb off and remove the chip and went smell this. The guy in front of me in line had the same problem. He put a different heatsink/fan on and replaced the T-Bird no charge. He told me they have been having problems with the Orbs and don't use them or sell them anymore.
I have that Asus Probe 2.14.08 and it is only off by 2 degrees F on the MB temp, verses a temp probe I stuck in the top of the machine near the PS.
My temps MB 87, CPU 122F, room 78F with Silicon heat sink compound: No overclocking.
Case has 2 fans 1 in front and one in back, and the 300W power supply also has a fan.
I guess I need to turn down the heat in my place.
