Need Help Bad Please....

Ok... I decided to go ahead and build my 1st computer... Ordered the parts off newegg.com and I get all set up.. I have an AMD Athlon Xp 1600+ and an Asus A7M266 mobo. I followed the AMD instructions exactly on how to install the processor, then did every step in the Asus mobo manual. I get my hd, dvd drive, floppy, graphics card, and memory hooked up, plug in the "main" power supply cord from the PS to the mobo. Plug the power cord into outlet. Hit the "O/-" switch over to "-" and the Athlon fan start spinning for like 1 second along with the other fans in the case then they die off. The green indicator light on the mobo lights up during the entire process, but the fans will never stay on and comp won't boot up... Any suggestions? (Had to take all the stuff out of that and reinstall in this comp so I could type this) Thanks in advance

Start over with minimum hardware installed.
Double check all the mobo settings(again).
Install only the cpu w/hsf and 1 stick of ram on the board.
Install the board in the case. Check that the board is not being shorted to the case.
Connect all the case wiring to the board(pwr switch, reset switch, speaker, etc.). Connect the case fans to the PSU.
Connect the PSU to the board.
Install the video card.
Power it up and see if it will post or beep or something. If it post, continue by adding one device at a time.

Thanks ill give it a try... one thing that i just suspected is: there are motherboard mounting like screws on the case that were just in random spots that i didnt remove before putting up mobo... they are thouching the back of mobo and are metal might be block some stuff :/

http://dev.www.sharkyforums.forums.relay.cool/ Removed the attaching things from the back of case so it wasnt touching anything, hsf/proc installed, 1 stick of ddr ram, etc still only turns 1-2 seconds. the entire time though the green indicator light on the mobo is on though meaning there IS power going to the board.. friend on daoc said some mobos cut power when it thinks the proc might overheat? if so shouldnt it run at least a min or so till it gets hot? btw running an enermax 330w power supply that came with this case i bought off newegg.com (looks like the new alienware cases).. Maybe its your ram. Is there any way you can try a different stick, other than you got together.

Not good! Powering up with the extra mounting posts in contact with the back of the board may have fried it.

Can you try other components to try and narrow it down to the board? (Or try your parts in another system.)

Would the green led still be lighting up though if it was fried? i "attempted" to try booting my system i have now with this power supply but couldnt get it to work for some reason :/

Try a known good psu with the A7M266 board.

Not sure about the green led remaining lit. Would think it's possible, depending on damage, if any.

2 rows, some of the plugs are 4 pins wide though... how do I know is the right way to plug it in or can i just plug in anyway? Thanks

You can not connect the case wires just any way. They must connect to specific pins.
Study the manual very carefully. You should be able to figure it out. Suggest you not power up until you feel sure the wiring is correct.
I don't have your board, but will see if I can look at the manual on-line.
If someone with the board doesn't reply, I will try to assist you tomorrow.

DAoC dont take this personal but I think you should get someone who knows what they are doing to put this PC together.

Leaving extra standoff's in your case can fry the motherboard.

Page 43 panel connectors, you notice all except reset Switch have a (+), if your power switch is reversed you get zip. The case wiring should have a common colour, that's (-). So now you can work out how they go.

If you HD light stays on permantly then reverse it, page42.

This board will not cut power if the CPU overheats, the CPU can be fried in seconds so the heatsink must be correctly attached.

You must have at least BIOS 1005 installed first or the computer will not boot with an XP CPU, catch 22 if you have older BIOS.

This board can be fussy with RAM, crucial is good, what do you have?

Finally the A7M266 is not on AMD recommended list for XP CPU's and ASUS doesn't claim it is compatable with XP CPU. They did release a BIOS for the XP CPU but that is not the same as stating the A7M266 is XP compatable. So whether it will work or work well is a risk you are taking by not checking first.

Yes im using crucial mem, the lights dont even light up on the front of the case when plugged in (ive tried switching around the plugs to the mobo)... It still might be the hsf though, im gonna reinstall it in a few min see if it helps. Thanks for the help guys :/

CAMS is correct. Page p.43 of the manual details the correct pins to connect the pwr.switch, pwr.LED, reset switch. etc..
Compare the diagram to the pins on the board carefully. The board should be labeled in some manner.

dont know if this will help,but try taking out all the power to ur devises and change them up a lil...

Ok a question...

Im using an enermax 330w pwr supply. On the back there is a "O/-" switch for power. Now, if i plug a case fan into one of the power cables coming out of power supply, plug in suppy to wall, and hit the switch over to "-", should the fan come on? Im just thinking maybe the power supply is messed up.

I submitted an RMA request over at newegg.com and am going to try and replace the mobo with a new one. See if that helps.
