I'm building a computer for a friend of mine using old crap parts that I found laying around my house. He won't be using broadband so I'm currently looking for a very good dial-up modem for him. Anybody have any recommendations?

IMO, US Robotics makes the best dialup modems, but they also cost more then most the others.
I'd check into multi-tech, before I went to cable, their external modem was the best I have ever used. I bought mine for $100 US right when they came out 3 years ago, I saw just the other day that the same modem was selling for $145. IIRC they are a division of AT&T spinoff, Lucent Technologies.
i'll second lone's opinion....i just purchused a USR modem ($36 one on newegg) and it's probably the best modem i've ever purchused, recoginized right a way with a xp and works like a charm ;)
Creative Labs, cheap, simple, works.
I purchased a Diamond SupraMax 56K modem about four years ago for my old computer. It still works excellent and I can easily connect at 50.2 kbps. I rarely ever use it anymore though since I have my fixed-wireless connection. :)
I agree. My creative modem works perfect, win2k and XP install it without drivers.Quote:

IIRC, the best brands were Diamond, USR & 3COM ... but something keeps telling me USR and 3COM merged their modems or something. Am I right?
Great experiance with Creative and Lucent here!
But why would you want dial-up??
With Creative and Diamond I get 53.3 connection. Both are great.
i hate dialup.... but my modem (some generic conexant one) connects at 53k most of the time so it's pretty good
IMO full hardware USRobotics. Last I checked the only real hardware modems out were serial. PCI/USB pretty much did away with them. They can become a pain when you need to use legacy applications. I think multitech still has some good hardware modems out there too.
Eric
Just make sure it doesn't say "WinModem" anywhere on the packaging.

I have the same exact story. That supramax is a damn reliable dial up modem, but it rarely gets used anymore, but it's there when i need it.
No one would actually WANT dial-up. It's a matter of still being forced to use it.Quote:
