Note, the July 11th date. :P
Yea, i think its a good way to gain even more hype before hl2 ships.
That is way cool. I've never played OF, and it didn't get good enough reviews to spend the money on it, but if it is free, I'm willing to give it a go.
So is Opposibg Force and Blue Shift free?
Does this free thing mean each free copy come with a key? ;)
If that's so then it sucks cause now whats to stop the cheaters from cheating, getting caught and banned, then going and downloading a new halflife with new wonid........
Well we all knew that HL was going to die. They are working on HL2, and I am sure there will be cool mods for it, and they will take care of those cheaters.

just downloaded the steam client and played my first ever game of CS...Hehe, man am I behind the times.....
Talking about mods, anyone know if valve has or will make it easy to just port the mod from HL1 to HL2?Quote:

The engines are completely different, the compilers are completely different, the way maps are made is completely different...it's probably easier to do it from scratch than to try to port it.
old news//
The version off of steam isn't the full version, it's only the multiplayer. I've been playing CS 1.6 beta for a over a month now.
Damn the link isn't working for me. So what's the deal? I hardly believe that I could get half-life for free.
so we can get a free cd now key?
They said that Steam will replace all that WON stuff (cdkeys, auth, serverlists, etc).Quote:

How it will work specifically, I don't know. Aren't they eventually going to charge us for using Steam? That might be worth it. A small fee and you get all of your Valve stuff, updates, through Steam, portable, on the go. Then as long as you have your user account, you can do everything.
I'm sure we'll learn more once HL2 comes closer to release, and they get Steam more .. eh ... stable. ;)
-edit- Then again, they might just ditch the whole cdkey/auth process entirely, and make it free as long as you have the games.
It be true. I started playing OF last night. The thing to keep in mind is that because you have no CD, when you hit a load spot on the map, it has to be accessed via the internet. If you are on a BB connection, load times can be a little longer than with a CD, but if you are on a dial-up, this could get annoying.Quote:

porting mods and maps will be a chore but it can be done...many of the basic things in mods could be ported but advanced features will have to be redone...but the principles are along the same lines...same with maps...a map that's done in hl can be ported to hl2 with relative ease...the geometry of the map will already be done but everything else will need to be redone...however with all the new tools that'll be included it's probably better to start from scratch for better optimization and of course you can make it look better as well...
