Supercharge your dialup 5X for only $10 a month!

Im sure all of you have seen these banners advertising up to 5x dialup speeds using a plain old dialup connection... well my cousin who lives in a god foresaken neighborhood (no broadband available) asked me of any other options.... so i signed him up for the $9 a month supercharged 56k at allvantage.com ... i was skeptical, but hey its only 10 bucks, so even normal 56k speeds would be alrite... well, the stuff works.... nowhere near the speed of my cable connection, but the difference is noticable, i'd say a good 2-3x faster loading of webpages.... just thought id tell you guys who are still on dialup... netzero/juno and taleng.com also offer the "supercharged" service.....

hummm thats funny i am kinda wondering how they are doing it bc the FCC will only allow up to like 56k or whatever.

Netzero and Juno have a proprietery thing, where webpages go through their servers and then to you faster, it doesn't make certain downloads faster though

It is probably similar to those netspeed programs that were around for a wil that save the page cached and uses the cached information unless it ahs changed which makes pages SEEM to load faster since it only downloads parts of the page.

Yeah, that's what they basically are I believe. There's really no way you can get faster than about 6KB a sec on dial-up.

For awhile there was some company offering a sort of "dual channel" modem that had the capeability to dial up two (maybe more than that) lines at once and combine the bandwidth; or at least that's what they were advertising on the box. So, assuming they were right, if you could afford to buy a whole bunch of extra phone lines you could dial up to your ISP on multiple lines and get 56k x 2+. I think it was a diamond multimedia modem...didn't last long though because I don't think anyone wanted to have three phone lines in their house.

i just hooked up a isdn line into our office last month because dsl isnt available yet :( its 2 124k lines tied together with a 16k.

and the 2 or 3 lines thing, why not just use shotgunning. i remember when i was like 12 that was the bomb.

I'm sure they use web caching too but they also use a form of compression where they send the page to you in a compressed format so the web page will be smaller in size...then when it gets to you it becomes uncompressed and displayed on the screen...

well for the allvantage that i used.... theres a program running in the taskbar that recieves compressed webpage info and decompresses it... theres no proprietary browser or anything.. it also tells you how much data got compressed and how much data is actually sent, etc...

That's what it was, shotgunning! It was like having two modems on one card.
