two ips! possible?

Hi

having some trouble with my home network. My workstation is hooked up to a lan based internet with a static IP. And my laptop is also connected to my workstation on a static ip. the two computers are connected through a crossover cable, and it works fine if i un hook the internet.

So my problem is this how can I use two static IPs at the same time?

um...there should be no problems, if they are a different address

i'm assuming your workstation has 2 network cards, right?

Like RPG said, it'll work just fine if they're different addresses. You should also put those addresses on different IP subnets or else your computer might get confused when trying to figure out where to send outbound traffic (depending on how you have your TCP/IP settings configured).

I am assuming that you are running windows here…….

For what you are doing, you should use the internet connection sharing feature. It will assign the address to the client and also provide NAT services.

that's what I did and I got this message "When Internet Connection Sharing is enabled your lan adapter will be set to use IP address 192.168.0.1. Your computer may lose connectivity with other computers on your network. If these other computers have static IP addresses, you should set them to obtain their IP addresses automatically. Are you sure you want to enable Internet connection Sharing?"

So I click YES

And I get this "An error occured while Internet connection sharing was being enabled.

Internet Connection Sharing cannot be enabled. A lan connection is already configured with with the IP address that is required for automatic IP addressing"

Well, put 10.10.10.10/24 on it and reset ICS.

Or....set it to dhcp and reset ICS

Or.....Go to help and read the directions.

Make sure that the client is set to be a dhcp client. And be sure to enable ICS on the proper interface on the ICS system.
