So i got a laptop from one of my friends for $200. :) It's a prostar 1ghz PIII, 320mb of sdram, 20gig harddrive. Decent little machine, but it over heats like a mofo. Right now its idling but running at 122 degrees F. It goes up to like 150+ when its beeing used pretty hard. Is this normal? Is there anything i can do about it? What temps does your laptop run at? Thanks for helping out!

Oh yeah, well i was installing windows updates and it was up to 172F...:mad: :confused:
I took out the keyboard and and and the heat sink...which had a 1/4" layer of dust blocking the air way! lol I also put some arctic silver on it cuz it didn't have that. It still heats up pretty fast, but cools pretty quick. I also notice the fan doesn't come on unless your in the bios.

Well i think its always on, but not as high as when its in the bios, i wish we could manually set how fast it goes! :)
Be very careful of using this on your lap... didn't some bloke in Japan get fried tackle from something similar to this?
If you are going to risk it - don't look at pron... you could end up melting an expensive hole into the underside of your laptop...
You might want to take a look at the fan....
Im guessing if the HS was covered in dust, the
fan might be a little dirty too. Also, take a look
at the exaust holes and make sure they arent blocked either.
Yeah i had it all disassembled and cleaned it up, still didn't do all that much. But with my cooling mod, it drops it majorly, just that i have to plug it into the wall, so i have two plugs, one for the laptop, one for the cooling mod. Anything else I could try?
Ok I think i figured out my problem! I had power saving settings enabled in the bios, which kept my fan off totally all the time for some reason...
So i turned that off, and now my fan runs all the time, and keeps temps sort of reasonable, like 160 at full load after awhile.
maybe these guys' idea of power saving is to keep the fan off and let the cpu burn up, then nothin draws power from the batter...jk
160 degrees?????? If that is the case, your proc would not be working. Maybe 60?

a program called SpeedFan.
I think that program is a little off in its measurement.
Anyone know a program that is pretty accurate?
