Fry's just opened.

A Fry's Electronics just opened today in Renton (20 mins. from my place of residence). And I can easily say, it is not what I expected. First off, it was absolutely the biggest computer store I have EVER seen. Easily twice the size of any Best Buy I've ever been in. It was also high class, with dark wood displays, a pianist, and faux marble floors. But, MAN, were there a lot of people there, close to a thousand when me and my brother got there. Quite a sight...too bad we couldn't stay long since my brother has a broken leg:D But, Fry's fabulous prices seemed to be missing...over or at Best Buys prices :( The only deal they had was a SHARP 21" TV for $99, and EVERYONE had one, literally. Now if they only had amusement rides...

EDIT: And, BTW, if you've noticed I haven't been posting quite as much, it's because I've been working A LOT, from 9-6 usually. But, now I have about $1200 not to mention my PS2 sale. So, look for a few mods and such coming in a few weeks...:)

And, yes, I will be saving a bit of it for...*cough*...a "car"...;)

The good prices will come back, they bumped them higher for the first 4-6 months, since duing that time people will still buy stuff from them. Then the prices should twiddle down.

Is your also themed?

I remember that one here was a cowboy one, the other one is an invetors/age of discovery one. However the inventors one isn't really that anymore. It's more like what you described, except the pianist is electronic. The piano just plays itself usually.

No, i don't think mine has a theme...but they did have an SUV in the store :D...some contest I suppose.

Damn, you guys have nice ones then. The one here is just a HUGE wharehouse and is always a zoo.:( In only go to Frys for the occasional deal, I would buy all of my computer parts from there unless I needed them sooner than a store online could ship them.:)

Fry's Electronics sounds like an awesome computer store! I live in Ohio and don't know of any Fry's stores close to me. I wish they would open one...it sounds like a great place.

I wish we had Fry's here in Boston. To my knowledge we don't have anything similar :(.

About the only thing I use Fry's for is getting AS3 and look for HSFs. Everything else just looks way outdated.. 1/2 the crap is returned too. Hell, they try to sell some cheap HSFs with the thermal pad on it that have die prints on them! Video cards are outdated, cases are overpriced... it kinda sucks. When they have good deals, they have GOOD deals, I can give them that.

I was there on the Friday grand opening. It was insane. An hour and half to get in the store -- luckily I ran into someone I knew already in line ;)). Everyone had a 27" Symphonic TV ($149), a refurbished brother fax/printer ($50) and some $20 DVD player. You'd see people leaving with shopping carts heaped with boxes.

There big thing on the grand opening is to sell something for $50 with a $50 mail-in rebate, so it nets out to you pay sales tax on the item.

I bought a 17" LCD monitor for $260 (my wife will love it), A 256MB of Mushkin PC2700 DDR ram for free (after rebate), and two 512MB sticks of PC2700 corsair ram for $50 each. Plus some other misc. crap.

There typical prices are higher than Newegg, but sometimes you can find a deal. Plus it's just an experience going to the huge store. The Renton store is about 20% bigger than the huge Fry's in Phoenix (only other one of been to).

Going to the Fry's is fun, but newegg will still get most of my business.

Over in my neck of the wood, there's no REAL computer hardware store like Fry's. :( Best we have is a computer centre made up of different shops over three levels of a bldg. You can spend hours on end just walking around looking for the shop with the right parts (and, more importantly, at the right price ;) ) Forget Mushkin, Corsairs, Swiftech, Buff Tech, and any 'exotic' brands.:mad: Why, I even had to specially order the Zalman ZM80C-HP and ZM-OP1 from the local distributor directly (and it cost me puh-lenty), not available locally yet.:mad: Just be glad you're where you are, especially those living in the good ole US of A!:D

When I lived in AZ, there was a new Fry's in Phoenix. That one was real nice inside, always kept clean and stuff in order. The Fry's here in So. Cal is still huge, but it's kinda messy and tough to find stuff.

Check the newspaper for their ads. At least twice a week they have a full page ad (usually on the back of the sports section) with their deals. I always look for the ECS K7S5A Pro & AMD XP processor deals to build people's machines, and the RAM sales are sometimes good. Oh and they have good prices on retail hdd's in the weekly sales ad. Often you can get a very decent case with 300-350w psu for about $29. If you can't get a paper, they have the newspaper ads cut out and posted somewhere in the store. That's usually the first place I look when I walk in.

edit: BTW here's their sister site outpost.com but the deals online aren't as good as in person.

Nahhh... I'm a transplant from the west coast, and hardly miss Fry's at all. I can almost always get better deals online and don't have to stand in line for an hour to check out. :)

A couple more things about Fry's.... you gotta watch it when buying mobo's becuase tons of people return them because they either can't get them to work or they are bad in the first place. Then they just put them back on the shelves. If you're lucky, they put a little sticker showing that it's been returned. Never buy one that's been returned.

One nice thing is, there's ALWAYS a few hot asian chicks behind the counter at checkout! :eek:

Only thing Fry's is good for is little peripheral components...ie. AS3, or MB mounting pins... don't bother with anything else as it's just so damned over priced. If you need something right away they might have it, but otherwise forget it. You're much better off ordering online.
