slackware

i am new to linux and i tried to do a clean install of slackware on a hd. i went through the install smoothly. made patition- formatted it, installed packages, configured what had to be configured. it said that install was complete and to restart computer. so i removed disk restarted. and it appears it didnt do anything. it says there is no boot device on the harddrive and it searches the cd and a:\

did you make the partition bootable? (there's an option in fdisk/cfdisk when you partition to make it bootable.) where did you install the boot loader (lilo/grub)? it would also help to know your hard drive configuration (dual booting, two hard drives, one hard drive, etc.)

i cleared the drive, re partitioned, made it bootable and now it recognizes the boot record but says something like cannot find operating system.

any other settings i forgot? thanks in advance!

What bootloader did you setup? Maybe you configured it wrong?

bear with me on this....i am really new to linux and all its wonders...what do you mean by bootloader?

i know there is something called a grub bootloader...dont know if it is on my system or not....i just found it via searching internet...how do you know/find out what bootloader you are using?

A bootloader is a small program that loads your operating system. You normally wouldn't see it unless you have multiple operating systems installed on your PC and you multi-boot between them.

Linux generally has two different bootloaders you can choose from, LILO (stands for Linux Loader) or GRUB (Grand Unified Bootloader). You install and configure the bootloader as part of loading the operating system.

If you've installed slackware without installing a bootloader then what you can do is put the slackware bootdisk into your CD or floppy then when it boots up tell it to boot the installation of slackware that's on your hard disk. Once you've booted then you can configure either LILO or GRUB to boot from the hard disk.

I can't give you any more information that is specific to Slackware - I run SuSE and Gentoo Linux on my box (as well as Windows XP and Windows 98SE). I have GRUB configured to present me with a boot menu that lets me choose which OS I want.

make sure you installed lilo in your MBR

ok so i just installed lilo on my master boot record...loads up- it asks me what i want to load(linux is the only thing on the drive) so of course i type linux...it continues to load then it asks for a darkstar username and password. what is this?

type in root as the user name and type in what ever password you setup for your linux machine

after you do that, make sure to set up a user account to log in with. you can do adduser or useradd, they each set up user accounts but one is more automated (forget which is which :p). then log out of root (type "exit"), and only log on with the user name and pw from then on, not as "root" (use the "su" command to log in as root while logged in as a user).

ya its good to have people that know a little something to help ya out. I know they have been a BIG help when it came to me making the move to linux.

ok- i told you guys i would be back with more questions so here it is....how do i set up my network settings on linux slackware? i have SBC DSL and am using a linksys router to connect my computers together. what and where do i have to do to get the network and internet working?

First you have to load the module (or make sure it is loaded) for your ethernet card (this is assuming that it is built in--if you did a default kernel install, it should be). What kind of network card do you have? Give me that info and we'll go from there.
