NEC FP912SB 19" Flat CRT, defective?

Hey I bought an NEC FP912SB 19" monitor last week after many users here suggested the NEC monitor. I received it today and unfortunately I think it may be defective.

What the issue is, is of course the display. Have you ever seen how the images in your line of sight can be blurred on a hot day? Like if you look at the surface of black top on a really hot day, you can see that rippling effect?

Well, my monitor is doing this. Doesn't matter if it's set to 800x600, 1024x768, 60hertz, 72hertz, 75hertz, etc. So I have two questions, one is what would this effect be called so that when I email amazon to say I need a replacement I can accurately describe the problem. The other question is, is this something I might somehow be able to fix with a driver or something of that nature? Seems like a long shot to me, but anything to avoid paying shipping and having to wait another week or two to get my monitor would be awesome..

I would mess with the settings on the monitor, it may just need to be adjusted first

That's weird... I got that same monitor and I had no problems with it. I just had to adjust it a little but it was fine...:confused:

Well, it's not so much that I think the model isn't good, I was just disappointed. Here's my monitor!!!! Ohh..have to send it back for replacement. =(

Well, I'll take it home (i'm at work) and set it up attached to my ATI Radeon 9700 PRO and play with the monitor settings, read the documentation on the CD, and all that sort of thing. When I see this stuff in the past I always figure it's some sort of problem with the refresh rate, and so when I tried two resolutions with 4 or 5 refresh settings, and it didn't really clear up, I was sorta freaked out - I wanted to see what you guys would say when you heard this..

Well, I got this monitor home and it looks okay right now but I'm running 1024x768 (32bit) at 60hertz. The display wobbled around quite a bit with same resolution/color depth, but with 70, 72, 75, 85 hertz. Which I find odd, considering my video card (ATI Radeon 9700 PRO) should be able to put that out aptly - and the drivers wouldn't offer those settings otherwise.

What settings did you guys mess with to fine-tune your monitors?

Oh, and by the way I didn't find this exact model on Newegg.com, but on amazon it was $288 out the door. No tax, no shipping. It was a full $112.00 less than PCNation had offered it for.

i just bought my fp912 from dell for 284 shipped it was a good deal shoudl be alittle while till i get it
oh and use the naviset software i hear it rocks

EDIT: i would personally run the desktop at 1280x1024 @85hz or if you have magnifindglasses for eyes you could do 1600x1200 @85hz <-reason for buying :D

Sounds like it's your vid card, not your monitor. I have a 9700np and get those rolling lines at certain refresh rates. Try a higher refresh rate, worked for me. Look here for more talk about rolling lines.

Yeah.. it works great right now, but as I said I'm using 60hertz at the moment.. which.. whatever, but I want to be sure the product I paid for is operating 100% that's all. What I'm going to do is read the link you gave, and most probably call NEC for technical support and see if I can get to the bottom of this.

The monitor itself is great, though, in terms of clarity and everything. I don't have much to compare it with. My first computer I had was an 80386 DX 40mhz system and I had an I/O Sys brand monitor, kept it for something like 6 years. Replaced it with the Frys special like $149.00 17" literally no-name monitor (it's completely clean. there is NO name on it, anywhere). So.. comparing my NEC to those is unfair, but I tell you it took me about 2 seconds to see a difference in color.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestions everyone.. I just want to be sure this thing really is working right before I really settle in with it.

As far as there being a problem with my video card (or maybe just the way its made?).. I really hope not. Thing of it is, it was just replaced, and to get Dell to ship my video card out was a few steps away from playing God (I went through some extremely bad service HOURS before they shipped it). Seems to work fine, I even run two accounts (simultaneously) of Dark Age of Camelot on the same system with all effects turned on in open Realm vs Realm warfare and my machine doesn't crash.

The other part of my concern is the fact the same video issues were apparent at work, where I have a TNT2 video card that to my knowledge works fine, and then I bring it home to my ATI Radeon 9700 PRO and same thing unless I bump it down to 60 hertz. I haven't tried 1600x1200 at 85 hertz yet or anything other than what I listed initially, but.. I will.

This may be true of Dell, but the reason (besides the price I saved over PCNation) that I liked about Amazon was this: My credit card is maxed, but I had the funds in my checking account and I have an ATM Debit Credit Card, besides my standard Credit Card.

Now, the problem is I bank at Wells Fargo and they will not ammend any notes to the ATM/Debit/Credit card (like, an alternate shipping address). My credit card is maxed, so I couldn't use my credit card. A lot of vendors these days like to be a huge pain in the rear and refuse to ship anything - without going through rediculous measures - unless your shipping & billing information match, OR you have a note with your credit card company for an alternate shipping address which as I noted above wasn't going to work for me.

So beyond just saving over $110.00 by paying $288 at amazon for this monitor, over the $398 PC nation wanted to charge (after their obnoxious $24 California handling fee, and their $60 shipping), I didn't have this issue of the shipping address.

Oh, and like a great many of us I work full time. So sending something to my billing address, where I will not be during standard shipping hours, then I get to wait until the weekend and go to the local depot which is a good 15 miles away. Blah.

Fraud? Seems pretty simple to me, and besides which a person these days can get your SSN and just call the bank themselves and append some other shipping address, so how is that secure? If I give you my correct name (as it appears on the card) and billing information, then whats the problem? Well, anyway, I forgot to mention that part.. although I'm surprised Dell sells it for $284. Not bad.

update on that acctually it was $284 but now they have 10% of all monitors and free shipping im canceling my order and re ordering :D

If you can only run your monitor at a crappy 60hz at 1024x786, it's time to get it exchanged! You should be able to run it at the recommended 1280x1024 @ 85hz with no problem. Sounds like you have a lemon. Call NEC customer support and I guarantee they'll send you a replacement for free (just don't wait until it's been 30 days since you made the purchase).

Don't settle for a faulty product!
