How about the poor mortals like us? We still have Radeon 8500!

Yo, guys.

You guys are all hyped about Radeon 9800pro beating FX5900..

However, most of 'mortals' (mortals: people who have no money to buy latest gadgets) have Radeon 8500le, Nvidia Ti300...etc.


I thought about getting 2500+ barton Asus mobo and 512mb ram.
But when I saw the result P4 2.8 gig (faster than barton) with 1 gig DDR ram and Radeon 9800pro showed maximum framerate of 70, my sweet dream of upgrading my comp crashed down!

i agree, i hope i get decent fps in hl2 with my 8500le :(

It's possible the 8500 will be at least a decent performer in HL2. It has a fairly strong pixel shader implementation, and that looks important so far for HL2. Obviously you will not get any of the DX9 features.

The minimum spec for the game is DX6, so you can run it on some very old hardware. My guess is that any directX8 card will be ok, but just won't look as good as DX9.

Have no fear! Our buddys at valve have made 5 special code paths for diffrent generations of video cards. One for each DX 6,7,8, and 9! And then we get that special mutated code path for our friends with under performing GF FX cards! Will the mutated code path look as good as the DX9 path? Tune in sept 30th to find out.... ;)

my 8500 will do fine.
