AFAIK 4x is better then 2x. So IMO I would leave them on 4x.

AGP x4 was an issue with older VIA chipsets (KT133 etc.). There was a reg hack for fixing that. Is that kinda what you were asking about?

Beyond some compatibility issues on some older motherboard chipsets with AGP 4X, you should always choose the faster AGP transfer rates over the slower ones.
The only time I would go with a slower transfer rate is if the video card was too demanding on the northbridge, especially with a tweaked out rig. GB_Cobber actually had to slow down his AGP transfer rate when he went from his GeForce2 MX to his GeForce2 Ultra (I believe).
