The people in the Gaming Forum knew it, this was a lazy excuse for them to push back the release date. People should be shot and hung for this, not the hackers, I mean the lamers at Valve. I dont buy that source code crap for a minute.
no one has sympathy for valve...
#1 is valve was so stupid about security they deserve to have their work stolen, multimillion dollar deal with ATI and they get hacked through their own email? ***???? wonder if ATI is going to sue valve over this, afterall many people bought the card for the game...no game, less sales, lawsuit.
#2 if valve is using it for an excuse thats sad, whats worse... actually getting hacked through your email or saying you got hacked through your email, your source was stolen, and your delaying the game to re-write the source? no one will trust valve with code and no one is going to be willing to ink anymore multimillion dollar deals with them either.
#3 HAHA
HL2 is an "Upcoming Game" and therefor I agree that this should be in this forum. Everybody calm down, it's not the end of the world.
Getting back on topic.
I don't understand why this would make them HAVE to push the release date back, unless the hackers actually destroyed the only copy of the source. If I were Valve I'd have a backup copy of everything that I made hidden away somewhere.
If they're re-writting the code just so that it will be different from the code that was leaked, then that's just a huge waste of time and money.
I'd like to think that Valve would only push back the date for good reasons. After all, they just landed a $6 million deal with ATI for their new video card, which will be outdated by April 2004.
good points... but i see why they would want to rewrite it, to completely squash any rumours of people using cheats from the hacked source and make everyone feel safe that their game isn't compromised but yes massive waste of time and money. if they destroyed the only copy of the source then its even funnier...valve would be the only company in the world not to backup their work...the deal with ati is what im talking about, wonder if ATI is seeking legal action...they could sue based on lax security measures...but who to sue? valve? microsoft? once everyone finds out about this they're gonna delay buying the card until april, by then the card will either be half price or obsolete...ati doesnt want that.
Check out halflife2.net/forums it's a warzone in there. So many repetitive topics.Quote:

I blame Valve for this, their security measures were piss poor. Who leaves the source code in their email account? That is what it sounds like was happening.
Looks like Valve has to take COMP101. Email is NOT a secure medium.:p :oQuote:

Also, a beta got out. I'm sorry but the beta looks to be HUGE why the hell would you leave that in your email account. If they were smart they'd have a computer on the network that they keep it all on that is connected to the developement computers on a network, however those computers are not on the internet at all, then another group of computers for internet use so nothing gets hacked or anything. Yes, lets keep the entire game and source in my email account! DUH?!?!??!?!?!?!Quote:

They must have used a FULL hotmail account to store it. Bill Gates saw it, and then leaked the code. Ah the conspiracy!:DQuote:
