Basically, my CPU fan has decided to run at full throttle constantly, while before it would run in moderation. It is set to run 'smart' in the BIOs, which meant it wouldn't do full blast, virtually ever. It still is, but it has decided to do so anyways. At 5000 rpm it's simply too loud.
Anyways, software utilites can't control the fan speed, either.
So, did another fan header just get mssed up? I can run other fans off the header, still.
Or what else is it?

Which cpu fan (brand name) are you referring to? :confused:
It's some sort of reasonable quality OEM fan, that came with the stock heatsink in the Biostar 200T. It's a 60x25 mm with fan speed monitoring, and I there aren't any labels that I saw.
It maxes out at 5100 RPM or so, and makes a racket, so that's the thing...
Would you mind spending some bucks on a new cpu cooler?

Two possibilities -- the fan's variable speed thingy broke, or the CPU really is heating up enough to max the speed. What is CPU temp? Search on, I think, SpeedFan in google to find software that can control CPU fan speed given you've the correct winbond sensors.Quote:

Yeah...I tried both Speedfan and the Biostar system control utility that works for my system. Neither did work, though they report the proper RPM.
CPU temp reads at 31 right now. Fan was running at 5100 RPM when I first booted it up this morning (problem appeared last night, but I shut off, seeing if something wouldn't just go away). At that point, BIOs read CPU as 17 C... (EDIT: According to the Biostar System Control Utility and SANDRA, it's 31 C right now, too...)
So, it really is possible for it to fail?
Anyways, if so, anyone recommend me a decent 60 mm fan that supports speed adjustments and can hit say 5000 RPM?

Well, I ordered a new fan.
Also found out someone else had the same issue. The question is - can a fan header be partially broken? So, that fan speed can't be controlled via software but it still powers.
I guess what I am asking is - how does software fan control work?
