I plan to buy myself a 7.1 speaker system with an Audigy 2 ZS sound card soon. But my only concern is what's the additional decoder for? I mean the speaker system itself can give me DTS and other major digital sounds already when i play movies, right? Besides, this speaker system will only be hooked to my computer. So is it necessary to get it separately?? Please tell me some hints about this newly thing.
if it's only hooked up to your computer and nothing else (ie console system, dvd players, etc), you won't need the decoder.
So without the decoder, will i be able to convert between stereo sound to pro logic and stuff when i listen to music? just like Inspire digital 5700 does.
If the source is from the PC, you can use CMSS or Stereo surround in the soundcard software to upmix stereo sources. Eg. MP3's
If the sources is not from the PC, (eg. console system) then it will not upmix it.
IF you are like me and want ps2 or xbox with 5.1 audio and have that as your dvd player, then YES a decoder is necessary for external, non pc parts.
If you are just gaming and watching dvds on the pc and using tv out for the dvd, then no decoder is necessary. Or creative's flagship card would surely suck
