I bought a Maxtor ATAT/100 HD a little while ago that came with a Maxtor/Promise ATA/100 controller card. I also bought the A7V133 mobo the supports ATA/100 onboard. Would I get faster transfers with the HD connected to the controller card? (I will work with video) What other advantages would this provide to me? Thanks.

I can't see any reason to use a seperate controller card. The A7V133 already handles ATA100 (up to 8 devices)
The extra card would just tie up another IRQ and you wouldn't see any performance boost.

the controller card is kind of a pain anyway, I was using the promise ata100 card and everytime I reformatted my drive and was loading windows, I had to remove the card. because when I booted with the windows startup disk,it would do a pci scan before loading the cdrom drivers. it would get to that point and stop..who knows it could've been a freak thing but it was a pain...

I wouldnt use it. Just add it to your stack of extra hardware for a later need. The onboard ATA 100 will be the same speed, if not mabey faster.

can you imaging trying to power 12 IDE devices + a 3.5 floppy off a generic PSU? not that you're using one, falcon, but for imagination's sake.... :shudder:
I think the PCI IDE controller would be nice if you wanted every single IDE device in your system to have its own IDE channel (ie, Hard disk 1 on IDE channel 0, HD 2 on IDE channel 2, CD-RW on Ide Channel 0 on the PCI card, etc). but that's probably only an option if you're the masochistic sort https://www.sharkyforums.com/images/.../2005/06/5.gif

Since your new hard Drive is cable to run at 100MB/S then in order to be able to use your H/D at this speed your M/B should have controller to be run at ATA100. Your AV7133 comes with Promise ATA100 there fore you don't need to use your extra ATA100 board. You could sell the extra one and save some money.

If Im not mistaken, the VIA Apollo KT133a chipset itself does ATA/100, and the north/south birdge is about the best place to have such integration, so by all means go onboard. Plus you'll save a PCI slot and IRQs.
