Grado SR60

So what do you guys think about Grado SR60 headphones? I can pick these up at Cambridge SoundWorks for $70 + tax. Do you guys think these are good headphones to start with? My budget is tight (thats what college and no job does to you), so I need the best bang for your buck headphones. These will be used for music (mostly rock, some rap), movies and games. So what does everyone think?

EDIT: These will be used on my laptop's integrated sound for the time being, since this is the only computer I have with me at school. I will be building a new computer for myself for school this summer which will have a soundcard (probably the Chaintech AV-710)

I believe at head-fi those are the classic best bang for the buck headphones. ttvj says they're the best all around headphone under $100.

don't get them without trying them. grados and beyers fit into the category of headphones that not everyone likes. I do not like either of them at all, yet some people swear by them.

I love my alessandro ms2s(based off of the grado 325 design). From what I've heard and read the grado sr60 is pretty much the best under the $80 mark. If you do decide to get them, invest in sennheiser 414 or flat pads. They are more comfortable and also improve the sound.

It's pretty hard to try out grados since hardly any local shops carry them. Just buy them where there is a 30 day return policy. Good Luck.

Yeah, I think the store has a floor model you can test out...Now what about these pads you speak of? Where can I find them and what are the purpose of replacing the pads? Better sound or just for comfort?

Most complain the stock Grado pads are like having screws pounded into your ears, so the Sennheiser HD414 replacement pads provide a more comfortable alternative::)

The comfort is about 35% better and the bass is extended more and while maintaining the rest of the grado sound signature. If you are seriously interested in finding some, pm me.:)

That's in my opinion because I don't want to make him think that the senn pads completely rectify the comfort issue. It doesn't it's still there somewhat.:)

i also dont really see how pads can make the bass better...

maybe it'll isolate more/less, but yeah..

Yup, just like the grado flat pads, the sennheiser pads extends the bass. Pads can altar the sonic features of headphones. I researched this at head-fi and bought a pair before my ms-2s came in. The pads are made from different types of material but I'm not exactly sure what it is that provides the better bass.

I believe isolation is about the same.

you should take every word from headfi with a grain of salt. ;)

Well...I went to the store today after classes and tested out the Grado SR-60's. I listened to them for about 10 minutes using my iPod. Now where to start, first off the headphones were extremely uncomfortable. The pads were stiff, and it just didn't feel right when I had them on. The highs were ear piercing and did not sound good at all, in my opinion. So I decided against purchasing them and once again in the hunt for good entry level headphones. So what do you guys suggest? My budget is give or take $100.
