i finally decided to add a subwoofer to my audio setup. i've heard good things about velodyne, and i like their punchy sound, so i got a velodyne VX-10 (link)
i have DALI Concept 2 speakers, hooked up to a NAD L53 receiver.
my question is, which crossover frequency is most optimal for my setup? atm i've got it set to around 70Hz.
I don't know if there is a 'best' to be determined. It can come down to personal taste. I've found 70-75 optimal for my home stereo.
I agree with Rock-try several settings. I have four bose speakers mounted in the wall, 2 front + 2 rear and a center bose on top of tv and I use a powered svs subwoofer with a 100 hz crossover. I am using a Denon avr. :D :DQuote:

Just a little more clarification on crossover frequencies: 70hz is a fairly standard default setting. However, the fine tuning is determined by a few factors, one being the midrange/satellite speakers you use - if your "full range" speakers are small, setting your crossover too low will cause a gap in the mid-bass, and drums and some bass guitar won't sound as nice as it should. On the other hand, using nice, large-woofer satellites can cause the sound to be muddy if you set the sub too high and have both overlapping the mid-bass - I see this a lot with mis-tuned systems, and the bass drums sound like they're hitting a bowl of oatmeal with a wooden spoon.
Basically, depending on the quality of your speakers, set your subwoofer's crossover as low as you can without causing a gap in the sound. It will come out cleaner and snappier.
80hz is reference crossover.
i recently bought a pair of Primus 250's, but still find 70-75Hz to sound the best. i prefer the softer, smoother lower bass of my velodyne to the almost over-punchyness of the 250's. around 75Hz seems to be a good compromise.Quote:
