The best CPU fan

What is the best CPU fan available? I have been looking at the Thermaltake chrome orb. It is for my current system (sig). My computer idles at 122F. That is kind-of warm, seeing as I don't overclock it. I have heard about some fans not being good for the Socket A, because of the size might crack the CPU. Is the chrome orb one of them? I thought it was the gold orb, but I'm not sure. Just thought I would make sure before I try and install it. (cracking my CPU would suck)

my answers are...

if your worried about cracking the cpu = get a copper spacer and remover rubber/felty fet on the cpu, and don't forget some good thermal paste(like artic silver).

its the heat sink pressure/weight that cracks the cpu not the fan, along with improper install.

the best 60mm fan (as far as i know) is the delta black label @ 38cfm 7000rpm. beware this thing is a bit LOUD, and you might have to use a 3 to 4 pin converter to plug it inta the powersupply(not mobo).

as far as bet hs fan combo, check out overclocking/cpu forum there is lotsa talk about this exact thing. seems to be the wbk-38, or the fop38

i have no idea about the orbs.

my recomendation is the Volcano II, inexpensive, easy install, decent temps, n' not superloud. but, its up to u.

You might try this in the overclocking forum. You'll be swamped with opinions. Right now I like the NoiseControl Siverado. Extreme cooling and oh so quiet. Of course, they cost something like seventy buck with a twenty dollar shipping charge.
For a slightly less extreme cooling (and quite a bit less cash) you might try a GlobalWin FOP or WBK.

I would not go with the chrome orb. I've got one on my T-Bird 1.2 and the sucker idles at 48 C / 118 F. After a game of pretty much anything it is up to 52 C.

I've also heard that the delta black lable is the best, but screams like a banshee!

what about the thermalengine with the delta fan

they look very nice

I dunno how the whole orb series got to be so big, compared to mostly anything else right now they're pretty crummy. I wouldn't go for the volcano 2 either, it's sort of a standard heatsink with nothing else to recommend it. I hear the thermoengine is pretty good, although I haven't had the chance to get my hands on one. Also, the alpha pal3065 is good, especially if you upgrade the fan. And I realize everyone else has said it, but the delta 60 is really loud. It's like a high pitched whine. It gets washed out somewhat if you have a bunch of other case fans, though...

I have a chrome orb...but not for long. Im gonna order either a FOP (modified) with a 80mm 40cfm fan... I hate Deltas...or a hedgehog with a "fandaptor" (from polycon) and an 80mm. Until then, I got a 127mm (4in) RadioShack Fan that puts out 80cmf. Before i was idling at 130+ ... now i never get over 112.
