*** apple?

Apple plays the role as the leading promoter of firewire devices for the last 10 years, and now I heard news that the next gen of (intel) ibooks are not going to have firewire. ***! I actually rather like firewire for external storage, and I have a firewire cam. No firewire, and no pcmcia I bet. If this is the case, I am going to try my damndest to buy a copy of osx (x86), once they are on shelves, and run it on my own Intel set up because using osx on apple's hardware is like watching playing doom on one of these:

From where? Although that does make a fair amount of sense, as the iBooks are the low-end portable.

I was actually thinking of picking up a x86 powerbook if they run Windows nicely. The only reason I switched back to PCs was because I didn't like OSX very much. The powerbooks have great battery life and are very cheap for 12" notebooks. My IBM cost over €2000, and I wouldn't even have considered the x505 if I wouldn't have gotten 50% off through a friend.

lol, im the opposite. I'd like to run osx on a thinkpad.

I've just picked up a Sony TX - it doesn't run OS X (nor would I want to) but seems a terrific little machine so far, very solid construction thanks to its carbon fibre chassis but also very light. Batterylife is superb so far, it's easily managing around six hours without making any effort to save power.

I'd still be interested to see the original article, dropping firewire on their lowend models for X86 doesn't sound right - although then again they have made the change to Intel which I didn't think was ever going to happen.

I am just tired of the hardware design revolving around the mind of a 10 year old, while their os is just leaps and bounds beyond any other desktop system I have experienced.

Care to explain how you came up with that? Apple has some of the most sophisticated hardware design of any computer company in the market. Have you actually seen the inside of a PowerMac G5? Can you imagine what Dell's attempt at the iMac would look like?

The interior design of Dell cases is good, their dual Xeon workstations are virtually silent, you have to bear in mind Dell have to work with the limitations of ATX whereas Apple can simply design their machines as they want.

Indeed. People would cry bloody murder if Dell used the same amount of proprietary crap that Apple does. Apple people don't upgrade, PC people do, so you're limited by what you can do.

Dell quietness is unreal. My father has a Dell Precision and I can't hear it when I turn it on. I have to wait 5-6 seconds for the BIOS screen to pop up just to make sure it's running (since it really doesn't have much in the way of LEDs either).

Which isn't to say that Apple hardware design isn't good, but they subscribe to the form over function school of thought -- things have to look good, and if they don't, they get canned.

That's the point, it looks great, but sometimes they just leave stuff out. The imac is great and all, but why not add extra network adapter in there? ibooks are nice and all, but whats with not having pcmcia? And powermac cases are pretty well ventilated, but whats with having that huge case with room for only 3 hard drives?! I'd rather run osx on a dell or ibm business class box, or something I built my self.

Did dell stop using their proprietary psu plugs or not? I own an sc420, and it uses a regular atx 20pin (or maybe 24, I forget) but I hear the consumer stuff is proprietary.
