This is in fact what I expect I'll have in the coming years, a WII and an 360.

He knows whats happening.
With Nintendo not really going after the same market as the other two, one of them was going to end up cozying up. I saw this coming from a long ways away.

Sony has yet to impress me with the PS3, the only game really worth noting so far is Assassin's Creed.
If I had to venture a guess I'd say that because the console industry has such high costs because they have to take losses on hardware, that the market is really only capable of supporting two firms. If you think about it there's always been only two consoles, and then a third firm that gets the scraps and loyal fanboys. Eventually, if that firm can't become a market player again in the next round, they go bankrupt.

Sega Master System

Nintendo SNES
Sega Genesis
Generation 3:
Nintendo N64
Sony PlayStation
Generation 4:
Sony PlayStation 2
Microsoft XBOX
Generation 5:
Microsoft XBOX360

I think that's really how it's going to end up. Now, I don't have any hard data to support the idea that the market can't handle more than 2 firms, but it seems plausible. I mean, think of all the consoles that failed: Dreamcast, GameCube, Saturn, 32X, SegaCD, 3DO, Atari Jaguar, Neo-Geo, etc.. Did they ALL fail on technical merit, or is the market only big enough for two firms? Dreamcast seems like the best piece of evidence for that theory. The market had already decided that Nintendo 64 and PlayStation were the firms in that round, and there simply wasn't room for another console regardless of how superior it might have been. It's at least, plausible.
It seems to me like Microsoft has already established them self for this round. If they actually meet their target goal of 10m units in the first year, they will be above the “failure” point before either other console gets moving. It would be hard for the market to tip against them.
The really problem is for Sony. Their costs are so ASTRONOMICALLY high that if PS3 does fail, and it can, it’s going to be hard for them to punch back next round. Nintendo can fail and not be in such bad shape, even if they have to sit out two rounds because: they have GameBoy and Nintendo DS AND their costs are a lot lower.
I think that Nintendo has taken a very careful approach since they saw what happened with Sega when costs got to high. I mean both Saturn and Dreamcast where complete failures that had extremely high costs. I definitely think that played into Nintendo's decision to make GameCube a relatively low-cost unit, and then when it failed to achieve market dominance, it didn't hurt so bad.
Microsoft, on the other hand, doesn't really care because they have more money than they know what to do with. It's really all about Sony this round. Who will win, PS3 or Wii?
wouldnt sega core system be a rival to the first nintendo?
I suppose it could be.Quote:
