Why do some forums not allow Hotmail as your email when signing up?

Why do some forums not allow Hotmail as your email when signing up?

Or other annonyomus email servers?

also it keeps a lot of idiots out.
Just look at the list here: http://www.big-boards.com/
there is exactly one forum in the top20 that isn't filled with idiots.

Righto. On the forum I run for work, we've had a huge influx of spammers. Most of them are using mail.ru, gawab.com or cashnette.com which are easy enough to bad/filter and leave the yahoo/hotmail/gmail folks alone.

Thanks. I don't have an email address with my ISP account. Does Outlook Express count as banned email or could I use that.

Outlook express doesn't give you an email address. In the worst case, find an obscure free email provider that they don't block.

I block all free mail providers on my server even though I used them on forums. If there is someone I need to exchange mail with I add their address to the white list.

It's very easy to abuse free email accounts and it's hard to tie one to an actual user.

I have my yahoo account that i have had for over 10 years, and it sucks that I have to use my school e-mail for some forums.

I can't blame the Admins because of the almost unlimited acounts that can be created, though now it is harder to create multiple accounts.

At one time I had 3 yahoo accounts, a MSN account, a g-mail account, and a comcast account.

now I have 3 accounts, for work, school, and general, much easier to manage, especially if I can't use a free email account.

It seems that work, school and associated accounts work for setting up an account if you can't use a free email, not sure about using AOL, but I don't see why it would not work, if you can. I know its annoying, but its so users and the forums don't get spammed.
