Can anyone suggest a free, downloadable media player that is available? I've been using Windows Media Player for playing music and video files on my pc. I don't need to do any burning or ripping with it, just playing files.

If you want something that's going to keep a library, you give could iTunes a shot.
If you just want a simple player that will be able to play virtually ANY kind of file without having to worry about codecs, VLC is your best option. The latest version even has pretty good support for FLV.
Totally agree with VLC. Been discussed a couple of times before but its a great little free modern player, similar asthetical style to the old media player in win95 but plays almost any file and doesnt hog resources so you can run it on an older system without skipping or lagging.

I consider dBpowerAMP Audio Player to be worth a look. It supports just about all the codecs you could need and has many useful features like crossfade and gapless playback.
For audio I really like the combo of Uberview + Foobar, it just doesn't get any simpler and clean than that IMO. Uberview is great for organizing your music collection and its just a file you run and doesn't actually install any software on your system.
As for video, I still prefer Zoomplayer as my favorite free player. I use VLC for the rare occasion that Zoomplayer won't play a file, but I really can't stand how VLC doesn't have smooth scrolling forward and reverse throughout a movie, if it wasn't for that I would consider using it as my main video player.
My personal favourite would be Media Player Classic
VLC is simliar to media player classic in layout. Both use low resources which for me is a must.
