Has MS done away with the standalone version of Visual Basic .NET? I dont see it for sale any more, e.g. Amazon, New Egg. It was a bit over $100, while Visual Studio is around $260.

The old version of VB is gone (that is, VB6). Visual Basic.NET Express is available for free: http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/vb/
the first time i liked Windows more than the Mac was running VB5 on a Windows 95 machine.
i actually wrote some simple programs, a simple polygon viewing program.
i got a copy of Visual Studio recently. it's just not the same.
i would love to see Microsoft bring back a version of stand-alone Basic.
With the move to .NET, don't hold your breath waiting for the old VB to come back. Unfortunately, VBA (the Office macro language) is not going away, but VB.NET has completely replaced VB. This is a very good thing in the long run and the VS Express editions are pretty powerful and easy to use for being free downloads.
Yeah, I can understanding liking the old QBASIC, but I never would've expected someone to want the old VB to come back. :D
