Wireless suggestions
Well my father has asked me to come up with a wireless setup for him. My brother just bought the house across the street from him. They just want to share his highspeed internet connection.
Right now he just has a plain linksys router to the 2 computers in his house. My brothers new house is probally 300-400 feet away.
I have heard you can get a linksys router and boost the firmware and can get a lot more distance from them.
But, i havent done much research on this stuff for a long while and though i would ask you guys.
Thanks for your help.

Use an outdoor or window mounted directional hi-gain antenna.
There is a legal limit on the actual power output allowed.
Make sure that the sharing does not violate the ISP's service agreement.
Most, if not all, residential service agreements prohibit sharing the connection with others at more than one address.

You need clear line of sight between the houses, and one (or may two) directional Antennae.
With the hardware you have to Bridge the two locations.
This page describe variety of scenarios, http://www.ezlan.net/bridging

Thanks. There is line of site and i will bet i over estimated the distance.

If there is clear line of site start, and smaller distance, start with directional Antenna on the receiving device that would be installed in the second site. Might be that it would be sensitive enough to get a functional signal without bigger investment in hardware.

What kind of equipment would you suggest at the starting spot. Should i just replace the linksys router with wireless router and then try to hit the house across the street with the directional?

It is hard to predict.
In most places a Wireless Router that is places inside a house would not go through walls and travel few hundreds and more wall in ten get into a device that set as a client.
The first attempt should be placing a device in a window facing the other house and a second device configured as a client in a windows facing the source.
Whether you can do it with two devices (Router, and a WDS Router etc.) is a matter of how the inside is suppose to work (the link in my post above lists few scenarios).
The best would be to have a Wireless Router to serve the first house and a Wireless Router to serve the second house, and two additional Access Points at the Windows doing the Bridging.

you will want a router with MIMO and/or signal amplifier to reach the other house.. i would highly suggest the Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 if you are on a budget (its built in amp is about 2x range of regular 54g routers) or if you got the money get a true 802.11n router.

Will this just plug in to the router and mount it on the second story attic?
I think i may just try to get the access point setup and see how far i can reach with my laptop. I was over there yesterday and im guessing its probally only 200 feet
