Vista monitor resolution problem

I know this problem has come up before, but I need to ask...

I just bouth Vista Premium 64-bit. I'm running it on a 17" Acer flat screen monitor with an XFX GeForce 8800GT video card. I've tried changing the resolution and it will only let me go up to 1024x768. Even if I change the setting in advanced options that allows you to see the unsupported resolutions...nothing changes. 1024x768 seems to be the max It can reach.

I've read a number of forums but no one seems to give a solid, safe answer that makes sense, really. I have the latest drivers and everything.

Little help? This res. is killing me!

Guessing that you've downloaded the newest video card drivers?

Apparently when I try to install the new drivers for my 8800GT, it says "FATAL ERROR: You are running a 32 bit version of Nvidia uninstaller on a 64 bit system..." followed by "Setup detected that the operating system in use is not Windows Vista [64 bit]. This setup and its associated drivers are designed to run only on Windows [64 bit]."

My god...Vista's already giving me headaches. Even moreso now that it's tied in with Nvidia problems.

How do I uninstall my NVIDIA Forceware display drivers?

When an NVIDIA display driver update is performed, the new driver will remove the previous drivers during the installation processor. Sometimes it is not successful in removing the older display drivers which can lead to display issues later on as a result of conflicting drivers. As a basic practice, it is recommended that you first uninstall the older display drivers before updating to a newer version. To uninstall your current NVIDIA Forceware display driver from your system, please follow these steps:

1) Open the Microsoft Windows Control Panel
2) Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon
3) Depending on which driver version you are using, your graphics drivers may appear in differently in the list of programs installed.

-For older NVIDIA display drivers, it will be listed as "NVIDIA Windows Display Drivers". Click "Change/Remove" or "Add/Remove " button to remove the drivers from your system.

-For newer display drivers, it will be listed as "NVIDIA Drivers". Click "Change/Remove" or "Add/Remove" button to remove the drivers from your system. If your PC features other Windows components, then Windows will list the other NVIDIA components installed as shown in the picture below:

I gave it a shot. Uninstalled the previous Nvidia driver and removed the Nvidia files using Driver Cleaner Pro. When I restarted and tried installing 175.19 driver again, it gave me the same 32-bit uninstaller on a 64-bit system series of errors.

I tried installing 175.16 driver and they worked fine, so now I'm on the last driver before 175.19 which shouldn't be an issue.

Now I'm stuck with the monitor resolution problem. Nvidia and Vista seem to think that 1024x768 is the max resolution possible. This is only -after- installing the driver.

Well, Vista was driving me nuts so I pulled an Acer widescreen monitor out of my back pocket and put it to work in place of my AOpen 17" and...it works! I've got my resolution currently set to 1400x1050.
