Does anybody know of a good place to find hdmi, optical, and other theater goodies for cheap?
I bought a few hdmi cables on www.monoprice.com with no problems. Newegg.com also has some decent prices on cables.
As for speaker cables, if you're looking for high quality, high copper content cables then you might be best making your own, especially if you need to food them through gaps and make custom lengths.
I make all of my own cables. It is very inexpensive once you have the tools.
monoprice.com is always your best bet for good quality cables on the inexpensive side. (Note: I did not say cheap. The cables are high quality, just low price.)
Making your own is another route as well, especially if you are doing a custom install.
Nothing new to add? Guess not. lol :p
I've bought about 2 dozen cables and wires from monoprice, couldn't possibly be happier with them.
Most recently bought a second 100' spool of 12ga white speaker wire for $28. That same 100' would cost $70+ anywhere else, even other online retailers.
Another vote for monoprice.com
Making your own cables is great if you already have the tools which can be expensive for a quality set.
ok thanks everybody. I think monoprice will do for now. I'll consider making my own in the future. Just don't wanna buy the tools right now.
I don't have a need for HDMI cables. My Cisco DVR has an HDMI connection, but my other home theater equipment uses either fiber, RJ45 or RCA copper connections. The most difficult cable I've made is a 62.5/125 multimode fiber cable with SC connectors.
See I'm the opposite. My home theater used to be all TOSLINK, Coax, RCA, etc. Now it's all HDMI. So much nicer. A single cable from every device to my receiver. A single cable from the receiver to the TV. I love it. :)
When I move to new digs, I'm going to replace all of my equipment ($$$).
The newest piece of gear I have is the Cisco DVR and it is getting long in the tooth.
My setup is almost 9 years old.
HDMI may have a lot of flaws, but the whole "One cable for everything from each component" is definitely one of it's biggest wins. Like you, I have 3-4 devices, a receiver and a monitor. Now I have on cable going between each device and the receiver, and one cable to the monitor. I love it. Much cleaner.
If you're looking for the best audiophile / videophile grade cables for the money, then I'd have to throw in a vote for AudioQuest. The best prices I've seen have been on ebay for the most part. I sold and installed this brand, and others, for 4 years while in the A/V industry. I still use them personally. They will make sellout brands like Monster Cable look like cheap junk for half (or less) of the price.

monoprice always worked well for me.
