defective usb connection
I returned a usb wireless network adapter because its performance was growing progressively worse. The manager told me that the white part of the usb connector was "yellowish" indicating that the current was unstable and that this is the reason for the poor performance.
Is there any way to check this. I don't want to ruin anything I connect with?
The manager told me that the motherboard or the external case would have to be replaced. Thanks in advance.:(

Never heard of such a thing. I dont think that there is many items you can ruin with that.
What item would you connect to the USB port?

That sounds bogus to me.
I can't really see such a low power connection causing plastic to turn yellow. Sounds more like a defective device to me.

That sounds like a Geek Squad manager. Was he out of high school yet?

things to attach to a usb port: printer, scanner and network adapter. I only have 4 usb ports on my dell dimension 4300 computer.

If it even worries you a bit(shouldn't) pick a different port.

Cheap parts usually lead to degradation and yellowing can be caused by being a smoker, overheating or who knows what else.
Listening to managers or employs at any retail chain is usually the worst mistake anyone makes when it comes to tech. It's vomit-inducing some of the crap I've overheard while wandering the shelves at local outlets.
