Tax return is back, time for a new system!!!

Hello all,

Well I got my tax return and it is time to build my system. I wanted to keep it in the $1700-$1800 range and below is what I came up with. this is a full system sans keyboard, mouse, speakers and a sound card as I already have those:

CPU: Intel Core i5-750 Lynnfield 2.66GHz

That PSU is about double what that system will use at load. You could easily go with a 650HX which will offer modular cabling and thus superior cable management.

I would actually keep the PSU as it allows expansion room. Also many underestimate power requirements anyway.

Be glad you're getting a rebate though, the tax office are trying to screw more money out of me by putting me on the incorrect code then refusing to answer the phone.

Looks quite literally like the build me and another guy posted on here recently. Personally I'm getting an i7 930 since, if you have a microcenter around, it is only $30 more than the i5, so why not right? And I'm getting a Radeon 5850. The 5870 is quite pricey. And what I've been told is not to spend more than $300 on a video card since they change so frequently. Other than those we have the exact same computer setup. :D

Not this time.. That's with a GTX280, an ATi 5870 will consume even less. Enthusiast forums are much less likely to underestimate power requirements than they are to overstate, often substantially.

Good point. I suppose it depends what the price difference is.

Im not saying there wont be nessesarily enough power, just if an extra 100w only costs $5 more, why not? Just in case the OP decides to go overkill.

You are right there, in that going with the 650HX doesn't save any meaningful amount of money and can in fact cost more. It does however offer modular cabling which might be an appealing option.

A 650W supply will be fine as long as you don't want a GTX 480 or HD 5970.
