Do I risk doing any damage by doing that. I cannot have my VGA CRT and my HDMI TV hooked up at the same time. I want to switch back and forth but having to shut down and reboot is kind of a pain.

Technically, no. However, it is recommended that you power them off before switching them.
okay so it should be fine to leave the computer on as long as the monitor and TV are both turned off. Do you know of some kind of switch like a kvm switch that has VGA and HDMI outputs?
Wow I've unplugged and replugged monitors for decades without ever turning anything off. Why would loss of signal be a risk?
Never been an issue for me.
Just being cautious. I don't want to fry my computer or my Plasma TV.
I think my dvi out on my 9800 pro blew out because of unplugging the monitor and connecting my tv to it while the computer was still on. Can't be sure, but I know it spark one time I did it. Don't know if I did it again and killed it, or if someone else did, or if it died on its own.
Tried it a couple times. It looks like the TV has to be on when the computer boots or it does no see the video signal.
