Dark Souls!

Picked up my copy this morning and have only been playing it for about an hour. Like the first one, it throws you right into the action. 5 minutes in you're already fighting your first boss - though this one isn't nearly as bad as the initial boss in the first game. I have to admit this guy killed me 3 times before I figured out his mechanics enough to down him - though on the 4th try he didn't even hit me. :cool:

Not really a spoiler, just a good tip for the first boss:

Don't fight him when you first enter his room! Run out of the far exit. 3 minutes later you'll be able to enter his room from the second floor and do a dropdown hit on him to start the fight.

Enclosing it in tags anyway in case you want to go through the game without any help whatsoever.

The gameplay is great - seems the same as Demon's Souls, possibly slightly tweaked. You have to be extra careful about which hits you choose to block with a shield, as they still do a good amount of damage to you (with the initial crappy shield). I'll post more impressions after playing a while longer, which may have to wait until tonight. Why does work always have to get in the way of gaming?

I chose a Pyromancer hoping for a good mix of magic and combat. Anyone else picked it up and played it yet? What class are you and how far in?
Edit - I also chose the master key as my gift, as most of the other choices seemed like they were either useless or only good for one use.

I may go by kmart and pick it up, they are offering a 20 dollar coupon on it. I'm trying to hold out!

Amazon customer service just gave me a $20 dollar game promo for telling them about the kmart deal. :)

Details as well. I was going to wait a week and pick it up for $40 used. I figure there will be a lot of used copies like Demon's Souls from people who get frustrated with the difficulty.

I did the chat. Just go to the CS section and start a chat. It only took about 5 mins to get the promo credited to my account. I ended up getting Dark Souls for 20 bucks with the 20 dollar Gears 3 promo and the 20 dollar kmart price match.

What system are people playing on? Won a $50 Amazon card today. Might pick up Dark Souls if I can get Amazon to do the $20 price match.

Tried the chat and Amazon told me no. So your luck may vary.

Thats too bad. Are you a prime member and have you been on there quite a while? They told me they are issuing the credit due to my long-time standing with amazon.

Well, I've only logged a couple more hours on the game... and I can report back that I have managed to beat only one boss. Wow. The difficulty in this game is crazy! I hope I'm just overreacting since it's been a while since I played the first game, but Dark Souls seems wayyyy more difficult than Demon's! About three different bosses are accessible to me right now, and I had to stop trying the first I came to as he one-hits me every time I fight him. Not fun when he's just about as fast as my character. Block one of his attacks and all of your stamina is gone and you're staggered. Dodging is doable but only just so - one of his swings tracks your movements tightly. He has so much defense and HP (massive shield and armor) that you'd probably have to dodge/roll about 200 times over the course of the fight.

The boss I managed to beat (the bull demon that the first vendor talks about) took more than 5 tries. Even after I figured out his mechanics and came up with a plan, he's so massive that I kept getting pinned into small areas from which I could not move out. At least he didn't kill me in one hit like the other guy.

So yes, insanely difficult. I would say in the few hours that I've played that I've died about 30 times. Much of that, however, is getting annoyed after a stupid death and trying to rush through the respawned enemies back to the point I died. NOT a good idea. If you aren't prepared to take your time, be smarter than me and put the controller down for 5, 15, 30 minutes or whatever it takes to regain some patience. ;)

I actually killed the bull demon on my second try. First time he got lucky!

You can drop on his head from the tower to take away like 1/3 of his life. If you stay reasonably close to him and roll away from his attacks there isn't much he can do. Also, firebombs.

I stopped playing last night when the next boss killed me dead.

Did any of you guys go down to the area with the ghosts yet? Those things are scary. :O

What class are you playing? I'm thinking I need to level up my character more - I was only level 3 when I fought him. I ended up using the same tactic you described, and maybe I got unlucky, but every time I pulled that move he pinned me in and I couldn't move.

I did fight those ghosts but haven't ventured much further in that direction. Except for their pincer attack, they aren't too bad (provided you use that curse item!). I haven't ventured back since dying twice in that area, as now I can't even damage the ghosts. Kama do you know if there's another place to obtain/buy that item?
