Help with Ubuntu sound
I have a dual boot system with WinXP/Ubuntu. When I boot to Ubuntu there is no sound. I ran alsamixer and the default sound card is the on board audio even though I have it disabled in BIOS. There is an option to switch the sound to the SB2. I switch it but still no sound. Rerun alsamixer and the onboard audio is back as the selected sound card. How do I get it to switch?

I'm assuming you have the right drivers? I don't know how SB works with Ubuntu but if their crappy Windows drivers is any indication.....

Hey DrD. You haven't really given enough information to give you any input that would be more than a wild guess. Output from alsamixer and modprobe and such would be super as well as an idea of what the actual model of sound card is :)
If you haven't already done much sleuthing, try out the info in these two links:

Sound card drivers suck a bit in linux in general for Creative Labs cards, but check http://www.alsa-project.org/main/ind...-Creative_Labs to make sure you're running the right ones as well.

Well it's a SB2. I am not sure what the exact model is. The card is recognized in sound options and alsamixer but selecting it in sound options does nothing and as I said alsamixer keeps switching back to the on board Realtek sound chip after I select the SB2. I'll have to look at those two links when I get back to the offending computer.

Thanks Vindir the Ubuntu forum page fixed the sound issue. Unfortunately, my network drives have disappeared. I have not had time to play with it to try to fix it. I thought about upgrading but the auto upgrade does not work. Can I just reinstall over the previous install? There is no data that needs to be saved. I mostly use linux for transcoding.
