I have a 8' long fiberglass whip,I took it from a boat that was being scrapped.
Will this antenna work,if I get a a base that is so-239 n one end and female threaded socket?
I' trying all I can,it has to be better than that dipole I bought.

Are you talking about an antenna for a CB radio (27mhz HF)? If so that antenna was made for a boat and usually wont work on land(uses water as the ground reflector). As you see a dipole has two sides , a radiator and a reflector. Also you need a SWR meter to make sure you have a good match (low SWR'S). Google CB radio antenna's. IT could have been for a marine radio (VHF). What kind of radio antenna are you looking for?
A lot of people wouldn't know what you are talking about but I repaired CB's back in the 70's-80's. Do they still make penetrators? I have a Big stick in my shed but it is so old the fiberglass needs to be recoated. Some marine antenna's had matching stub in the mount that would make up for not having the ground plane and would work for a base antenna. To use that whip by itself you would have to add a 9' wire off the ground side and basically you would have a vertical dipole. Still have a Yaesu FT-101E modified for the CB band. I used to run it where it would dead-key 5 watts and when I talked it would swing up to 75 watts. Haven't been on the air since 2003, the noise and skip was so bad back then.
Yes Hy Gain still makes them. They are listed for sale on Ebay for $150.The Starduster is also being sold there also, and the Astro Plane too
OMG, somebody had a Penetrator for sale on eBay for $430 ! Yes it was the best vertical 5/8 wave antenna, low loss 2KW . I see you can buy it from Hy Gain for $150. The Starduster was just a glorified 1/4 wave overrated. Had a Astro plane and a CLR2. It all goes back to the more junk iron you got hanging out there, the more signal radiation/capture. I see they make a big stick knock off with a ground plane Solarcon A-99CK 17' Base Antenna with Ground Plane Kit. If I traveled the roads a lot I would have a CB in my car. May hook my old mobile radio (import 27-29Mhz + FM&SSB) up this weekend to see what it is like out there. Afraid to turn on the Yaesu FT-101E with out replacing all the capacitors, it is probably about 35 years old! Has the 12volt industrial output tubes.Don't the new CB's have some newer noise reduction system?
Here is what you can do with that Whip! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bolyErI2888
