long awaited upgrade.... help please...

hello.

after almost 2 years of waiting, i finally am onto upgrading my computer... *drools* and thought i should make sure i am not making any mistakes.

i am gonna keep prophet II ultra/ 20 gb hard/ case with 300w from my current system and purchasing...

athlon xp 1700 retail
abit kr7a-raid
maxtor d740x 40gb
sb live 5.1

from newegg.com for $408 after shipping

256 pc2100 DDR

from crucial.com for $75

i am hoping this system will last me through college(i am a frosh)...

here are questions:

will the new system have any compatability conflicts?

should i get better graphic card?

should i get better hsf? if yes, then what should i get? (i don't plan to oc in a near future and quiet and stable running is important)

looks like it'll be a pretty nice system to me. https://www.sharkyforums.com/ if quiet is a big factor for you, get one of the heatsinks that uses an 80mm fan...some of these are the alpha pal8045, swiftec mcx462, and the thermaltake volcano7. a gf2 ultra should still be fine unless you're a gaming fanatic and want the best there is, but IMO i'd keep it and save a lil money

I think an Epox 8KHA+ or Shuttle AK31A would be better for the price. What do you all think? It doesn't look like he needs raid so why not save $50?

would 25 cfm be enough for xp1700? i usually let my comp run for days and days...

also, is there any sort of stability (since performance and features don't really matter to me) difference between abit boards and other lesser brands?

it will be enough because the heatsink itself is excellent and dissipates heat very well. if you want to be absolutely sure, they've also got this combo, with a 39cfm, 30db (still pretty quiet) fan...it's actually a dollar cheaper too https://www.sharkyforums.com/

I wouls definitley drop the Abit board. I had one and it sucked. Yesterday I just bought an Epox 8KHA+, and, except for the lack of functional FDD, i'm very happy with it.

Ok, couple things...
Get the oem xp1700 that way you save monet and can spend it on a nice alpha pal8045 with a panaflo fan.

Hard drive is good
sound card is known to have problems... I'd get an audigy... theyre pretty cheap too

Get the epox or shuttle boards they are better for your money.
Overall looks pretty good though. If your a diehard gamer then ya might wanna up to a gf3 or radeon but if not then save the dough.

Well, for some reason when I boot there is a floppy error. It just can't detect it. The FDD was fine yesterday, and I tried a new one with no success. I've also tried every wire i can find in every position i can find. It sucks, i'm gonna talk to Epox.

I just got the epox 8kha+ it is a great board for only $98 and no reason to get a raid board if you're not going to use it.

the reason why i got retail was for the warranty, cause i heard that some CPU can be defective or something...

and what's advantage of a pananflo fan? and where can i get it?

and for abit board, the reason i am getting it is cause it is supposedly the most stable one. if there is another kt266a board that's more stable (even if it is with less feature) please suggest one.

epox 8kha+ that'll save you over $40...you won't get raid but it's just as stable
