Linux Gaming

Recently slashdot.org talked about transgaming (www.transgaming.com), a company that is dedicated to getting "all Windows games" running on linux. There approach is to add full DirectX support to wine. Recently I decided to give some of the stuff a try. I installed the newest version of wine (off the cvs tree) and installed the 3D Accleration drives from nvidia for my TNT2 card.

The only games I have tested it with are Descent 3 and Half-life but both worked very well. However, both only worked in OpenGL mode. Anyway, as transgaming releases more stuff I will try out some D3D stuff and let everyone know how it works.

Heehee...why did you bother with Descent3? Loki makes a linux native port of it. ;-)

I had no luck trying to get Elite force to run on wine....but i'm running an old version of it. Got MSWord to run tho.

I did Descent3 because it was one of the few games I could get on CD in less then 5 minutes... What I can't wait for is Tribes2 for Linux https://www.sharkyforums.com/images/.../2005/06/5.gif For a simple test of LokiGames vs. Wine I ran Q3 in both, Q3 ran better outside of wine, but with some tweaking I think wine will be a good way to run those games that haven't been ported any other way.

I would like to see more games ported to Linux. I just feel cheated loading Linux to run win32 games.

From what has been said....They simutaneously release Tribes 2 for Linux and Windows...the MAC version will be released after those 2... hehe...

IN FACT...

The beta for Tribes 2 is already out for linux and many linux people have been helping test the online stuff.

The other day I read one Linux tester say they had them testing a WW2 mod already mostly done for Tribes 2.

From what I understand Loki did the port but worked with Dynamic so they could get the absolute newest code and keep up with the development. Apparently Linux Tribes 2 is in Beta 9 and has been "rock stable" since Beta 7. They are about ready to release it. According to Loki they went to great pains to ensure no compatibility issues betweeen Windows and Linux versions of the game.

Well the whole point is not to make you load linux to run win32 games but to allow you to run win32 games if you always run linux...

Yeah, I understand. It just seems strange mixing the two although it is an excellent concept. I would prefer all win32 or all Linux.
