OS X that bad?

I like OS X...I have a Mac Student Representative friend so I got a whole preview of it...its very neato...and I like it that you can still use a Terminal and do *inx type things

Torvalds doesn't like anything you don't have to compile every damn day

It seems more and more like Torvalds is a conceited jackass. I havent seen him say one nice thing about anything but Linux. Well, except for FreeBSD.

I whish i knew someone with an apple. Just so i could mess with OS X. That way i could draw my own conclusion. Maybe i would like os x. I'm a linux user and i did not let anyone influence me from not trying it or use it. I want to see for my self about this os x. I'm really interested in it now.

Note that he was also critizing the kernel, not the entire OS. Basically he thinks it's to large and klunky. But the way he thinks, everything should be small and streamlined with no GUI, so command-line only.

I think Linus has the right to express an opinion about a design of an operting system...its not like he said "OSX SUXORS!!HAHAHA"....he said he thinks the microkernel design theory has not lived up to the hype and has caused many more problems than it could ever solve.

I think Linus knows a little bit about how to design an Operating System...how many have you designed?

Yeah, and have you ever seen Linus say anything nice about anything that wasnt Linux or FreeBSD? Despite the fact that both of those OSs still have laughable multimedia capabilities compared to even lowly Win9x? You never see him mention that say, windows beats his OS down in most multimedia performance. Or OSX for that matter. He thinks his kernel is Godlike, and everything else is inferior.

And did i say he was wrong? No. Therefore why would you ask me if i had ever designed an Operating System. Technically, i dont think Linus did either. His open source kernel is the work of many people, and probably the majority of the current kernel 2.4 had nothing to do with Linus. My problem is that is seems that everytime Linus opens his mouth its to put down some other OS. You never hear him praise anything excpet his beloved Linux. That makes him pompous.

This is not Linux bashing. Matter of fact, i do most of my work in Linux, and i leave win98 on for its compatibility and better mutlimedia capabilities.

You can just head over to a CompUSA or Fry's or something- most stores have at least one or two G4s running OS X. I've checked, and I also have a friend who works at Apple, and he told me that more stores that carry Apples are supposed to have installed OS X on at least one machine.

It's pretty nice, you should definitely see it in action...

Linus was talking about the kernel. Multimedia capabilities have not much to do with kernel design. He was stating that the mach kernel is not up to the standard of the linux kernel, which is true. The same is true for the windows kernel. Linus doesn't bash every OS out there besides linux, I have heard comments about how he liked the user interface of BeOS for graphical applications (but he hated the closed-source nature..of course)...


The micro vs. macro kernel debate has been going on for years. Linus likes his way best of all, and is ready to site hundreds of reasons why. If you asked the mach people they would probably come back with reasons why there way is better... And both would be equally correct. Either way it is only an opinion, it just happens to come from a guy that does a ton of kernel development work, and who is very popular in the technical community, so it wieghs more in a lot of others opinions.

As for Linus being like Bill Gates... I have heard Linus say things to the effect of "That is what I said, and I fully agree that I was wrong". He never claims to know everything and he is not affraid to compeletly change his views on a subject. Bills Gates thinks he is never wrong, there is a big difference... oh, and that whole thing with money.

Ummmm, how can you say that mutimedia has little to do with the kernel when benchmarks prove that kernel 2.4 is 10-15% faster in Q3A than kernel 2.2.X. Seems to me it has at least a decent portion to do with it.

I used OSX for the first time this weekend.

My impresions were....

On the bad side:
VERY BUGGY...
VERY SLOW (on a G4 even!)...
NO APPLICATIONS and even the browser is a beta version of IE.

On the good side:
The graphical display is second to none!
The UI is friendly.
The full color scalable icons add alot, I hear XP is going to impliment this too.

My overall take is Apple should have held onto the product another 6 months. People would have *****ed about more delays on a product 2 years past due. However its about as buggy as Netscape 6, and we all know user response to Netscape 6 has eliminated any chance of Netscape ever making a comeback. I dont think this will kill Apple, but I think their market share will shrink as some die hard Mac faithfuls lose confidence.
