Open Source

The debate will probably go on forever. But I am curious as to what you people think. I don't want opinions on what OS is better or anything like that. I want to know if you think the OpenSource Model works, or if the closed model is better. If you agree with OpenSource then what kind of models do you think are best? Though there are more then two Open Source licenses there are basically two types: Type one is like GPL where you are permitted to have the source but if you make and changes and distribute it you must give away your source. Then there is the mach way of doing things were the source is open and you are not required to give back to the community.

My personal opinion is for Open Source. I like the fact that millions of people have the opertunity to fix bugs, security holes, and add new functionality. I am also a proponent of the GPL way of doing things. When you take a persons code and modify it and ship a product I think they should have the right to see and evaluate what you have changed, since it was there stuff to being with. I do think you need to exercise caution with open source code however, sometimes projects tend to be patch-fixed too much and code quality starts suffering.

I believe open-source is only worthwhile for those that can take advantage of it, i.e. programmers. Other than a little QBASIC, I don't know crap about programming so it's totally useless to me.

It does have some good qualities however. When a bug is found, it can be more quickly patched. On the other hand, loopholes can be more quickly exploited.

truth....loopholes will be (and have been) plugged on the net within hours of being discovered in open source projects..

With close source like microsoft...you first have to go through about a week of denial that its a bug, then some more denials that its really a feature then maybe a week later when THEY CHOOSE to give YOU A FIX that SECURES YOUR PROPERTY you get a fix....

The only problem I see with open source. Is that not all companys want to release open source drivers. Other then that GPL software can't be beat. Where ealse can you find millions of programers working for free. Ok so not all of them are working for free. I can still upgrade my os for free. Without worrying about copyright laws.

I bet you that Linux has more loop holes than windows, they are just not exposed for a number of reasons.

1. hatred of MS
2. Linux is not a major OS
3. Linux users have a good view of Linus Torvals arse.

You can goto a book store a buy a book of the linux source code, also known as a complete technical readout. Linux can be dissected with ease to find overy single weakness. The only reason these weaknesses are not exploited is that the people who know about them despise microsoft and have their head of Torvalds rear end.

M$ OS has their place on computers for better or for worse. If you wanna use windowze, good for you

Open Source also has a place on computers, For people who want more (be it stability, security, etc.) out of their OS/programs

Do you all want M$ to make all your decisions for you? Do you think M$ hailstorm and .net initiatives will do you any good?

M$ does make some good and interesting products. I run win2k and it works well. I also run Linux/Soloris/Dos/FreeBSD

If windowze works for you fine, If not you have other choices (quite a few free open source choices)
