Where are these lock ups coming from?!??

Ok, heres the deal. I get lock ups that i can not explain. I get them when i turn on my computer and the startup music playing sometimes. I get them when installing and playing Diablo2. I do NOT get them when running 3Dmark. I also get them when installing Unreal Tourney. I also do not get them when playing music. Can anyone explain these and cure them?

Heres my setup:

I have the newest sound and VIA drivers. I am running the 6.31 detenators. Any ideas anyone? I am all out.

Try and disable soundBlaster16 emulation in Device Manager.

Nah, that did not work... The game seems to lock up during high memory scenes when there are a couple enemies that suddenly come near me, or when I am leaving a game. Fortunatly, it has not locked up on startup yet https://www.sharkyforums.com/images/.../2005/06/5.gif

Ive already seen that page, but i am hesitant to do what they say. I bought a damn Geforce2 and i want to play my games like i am using one. I do not want to decrease my darn quality and speed. http://dev.www.sharkyforums.forums.relay.cool/

Random lockups are often due to one of three problems.

1. Poor heat dissipation (sp?)
2. Low quality RAM
3. Poor voltage regulation from your PS.

See if you can eliminate these possibilities before you start crippling your system.

I don't believe stats. In a discussion, something like 37% of people make up the stats they use off the top of their head.

Well just remember, the lockups are only at bootup and in something like diablo2 for example, but not 3Dmark. I have a 300Watt PSU, 128megs CAS2 PC133 crucial ram, and a VERY low system temp. That rules out that idea.

I am ***OFFICALLY*** declaring it a soundcard problem. Now, first things first, how do i make my soundcard have a _dedicated_ IRQ so that it is not sharing it with my PCI to USB bridge? I understand that soundcards need their own IRQ, maybe this is the problem.

its the video card.....
The kt7 is very picky with these
ati cards...forget it
tnt2 ultra (my card) crashes on dvd playback after 10 mins..EVERY TIME...(+_2 min)
I stuck in an old voodoo banshee...FIXED
its not heat (temp 38 with a few extra fans)
(temp 49 with no extra)
crashes due to TNT2 ultra

I'm going with the soundcard being the cause. I have disabled sound for UT while starting in safe mode for the game. NO LOCKS. But who wants to play a game without sound?

Look in that direction and post any fixes.

Try downloading and installing the Via IDE Busmaster Driver only, not the 4-n-1 driver. I do not believe the problem you are having with DVD playback is video card related. I am using a Geforce 2 GTS and after about 10-30 minutes of DVD playback, the screen would freeze, dump me back to the desktop, or just lock the system up. Also, my framerate was a just a little jumpy.

All of the problems cleared up when running the IDE Busmaster. I had previously installed the 4-n-1 drivers, but for some reason the IDE Busmaster didn't load. Once installed, Via has a nifty little program accessible through the Programs menu that lets you see the UDMA or DMA mode of each device.

It is not the videocard. I have disabled my soundcard + emulation and played diablo2 for about an hour and not crashed. Before I would crash about 5 minutes into it, but as Thooner said, who wants to play a game without sound? Anyone got ideas?

Ahh.. the USB controllers. I hated those little bastards. They had a tendancy to follow either your sound or videocard around in the IRQs.

Try to force your soundcard into a different IRQ from within the BIOS(IRQ #9 looks like a good candidate). If the USB Controllers follow it, move the soundcard to another PCI (slot #3 worked on my A7V), and try again.

ARGH! Moving the card does not change anything, these still follow me where ever I go! What can i do?
