CD-writer having problems reading

I just reinstalled my old-school 8250i hp cd-writer and now it is having problems reading cds. I installed it as a slave off my other dvd-rom. The thing can burn cds fine, but when it tries to read them, it just takes like 4 minutes trying to read the cd and nothing happens. Do you guys have any idea waht is going on?
