All this OC stuff kinda flirt with me. But with my crappy PIII there's not much to do but change the FSB to get the fabulous speed of... 640 MHz http://dev.www.sharkyforums.forums.relay.cool/. But only one question. When you overclock, do you actually shorten the life of CPU/components?? OC with proper cooling keeps your CPU in place or you are actually giving up lifespan? Is it the same for AMD and Intels?? Thanks in advance.
i am guessing that you are in some way. but if you keep the heat level down, you may expand the CPU's life.

Very likely that you would lower the life (more stress on a component the lessless time it lasts) but if you can keep it cool enough you could counteract or even extend life.....

I don't think that only heat influences the life span of a processor. I've seen figures that processors are designed to last around fifteen years, give or take a few.
Overclocking drastically reduces the life span of a processor. Better cooling will allow your processor to last longer, but the Vcore increases that are sometimes necessary to milk a CPU of every last MHz will probably shorten it more.

Yes, you can shorten the life, but with proper care and cooling, what you shorten of that life will still leave the processor running well beyond the point that it would be useful.

True...a CPU that might have lasted 15 years will only last 10 years. I doubt there are very many overclockers that would keep a CPU for longer than 5 years, maybe 6 at the most?Quote:

Let's say that the average life time of cpu's is ten years ok?Even if overclocking reduces it from 10 to 5 or 6 years who is gonna use the same cpu for so much time?

Ohh come on now! Who in this forum has kept the same CPU in their main rig for more than 2 years? Maybe 0.0001%...we are junkies. We need a fix more often than 5-6 years. Even if you reduced the life span to 3-4 years, overclockers are about power, and we are usually power users. A 3-4 old CPU won't cut it, and it is long gone before our overclocking has killed it.

Well...I was trying to make those who don't want to upgrade now feel a little better. Personally, I cringe every time a new processor or even chipset is released. Resistance is becoming increasingly difficult.

Besides, I really want to give my H2o setup a workout, and even o/c as high as my chip will go, it doesn't even start to push it. Last night my idle temps were 19C and load only managed to make it's way up 23C.
