Gigabit Networking
Has anyone seen any really good sites explaining the whole setup/architecture/basics/advanced of gigabit networking? It's what they're using on internet2 at the colleges that are implementing it currently I believe? What's the current state of affairs on that whole matter. I haven't looked into it in ages since I first found out about the whole idea.

Well you can do this now for your LAN.
But it costs a lot... Let's see, here's latest from pricewatch.com
1000Base-Sx Gigabit ethernet PCI card $399
4port gigabit switch managed hub $1295

I think your going to have to run fiber
No NO I'm sure you have to run fiber

our school is on that, its quite nice, and an increadable upgrade from to 128s

Copper gigabit is available. No need for fibre in a compact environment, i.e., 100m.
-
We are exploring the gig lan at work. The limit for cat 7 copper is 100m. Of course fiber is not limited nearly any where near that. I think current commercially avail switches will run fiber at 3 MILES.

The 3 mile limit is for multi-mode fibre. Single-mode fibre can go a much greater distance. I want to say 10 miles, but I'm not sure. Of course all you need to do to extend a LAN any distance is to insert a repeater. The is much talk of using gigabit technology to replace the ageing MAN technology.

Ask Qwest to put in a OC-3, and you'll a Gig LAN
