to answer your question: yes, most cd players can play CD-Rs. obviously it might not like all your media, though. the TDK Mojo is a pretty nice MP3 CD player, but yes, it's not nearly as compact as today's CD players. I have a Rio500 which you can upgrade to 192Mb (adding an additional 128Mb smartmedia card). I LOVE IT. The 800 is cool too & you can bump it up with backpacks (although Rio is very slow to release new sizes; although the MicroDrive "Extreme" one should go down in price, as IBM just lowered their prices across the board). I also have a RioVolt MP3 CD player, which is bulky, skips, and has a realy bad screen (with some dancing fairies... no, i'm not kidding).
My suggestion would be to buy a solid-state player & also get a replacement regular CD player. You just can't get anytinhg as small and portable as a solid-state.
I agree about the RIO 500's. I have two (one for the girl), both with 128MB total. Great down at the gym etc... Solid state = no skip and great battery life. One got stolen not long ago, and i didn't hesitate to buy another, just have to have one.
