How much are you programmers making? What could i expect to make coming out of college. My major is CIS. I'm really just getting started in May, but i'm just curious to hear what you guys are pulling home.

Also, how did you guys begin getting experience. I'm sure its gotta be tough landing a job straight out of college with no programming experience.

I should be getting a job as a micro-tech soon, but that is pretty much unrelated.

Landing some sort of internship is crucial. Most University's have some sort of internship program, which allows you to pretty easily get one setup. These give you valuable "on-the-job" experience and looks GREAT on a resume.

Without an internship, you need to show some sort of interesting University research or something to make you stand out from the crowd. If you spend every summer at McDonald's than you're going to have a harder time landing a job with your CIS degree. A degree alone isn't worth half as much as that same degree coupled with some real world experience.

I'm goin to check into the internship. But I have a full time job M-F, i don't know where i'll have the time for such a thing. I can't afford to quit my job, so this could be a problem.

BTW: You didn't answer the first question. I want to know about $$$$$$$$$$$

The amount of money you make will vary widely based upon your experience, what you do, where you are, and ultimately who you work for. Asking other computer professionals about their salaries will give you no clues as to how you yourself will fare. This field contains a wide range of individuals with all kinds of situations...a programmer can make anywhere from 25k-90k and more per year.

Btw: Common sense should tell you that salaries tend to be a personal matter, and that few people want to shout theirs out here on an open forum. I'll you mine if you want, but I have a very unique situation (I am a full-time Technical Director and a full-time student, about 20 credits away from my CS degree), and I doubt the information would help you at all.

There are plenty of "technical salary survey" sites (hint: search engine) out there where you can plug in information that pertains to you and get a relative idea what you might be able to expect.

I do consider my salary a personal matter, but I'll give you this:
A Ph.D. will add at least 20% from the start - not a great turnaround on the ~6 year investment, but there's no glass ceilings then. Once you tack on 5 years of experience, you're sitting mighty pretty, and get to move out of the grunt programming work

Well I don't want to be as unnecc. brutal as praxis was, but it is a very personal question whether you know us or not. Be advised asking that to someone in person is highly frowned upon; I don't even ask my friends about that, and they respect me enough not to ask me. Plus in a forum like this, you'll have people from around the country and world. Salary ranges will be way off. Someone in DC making 50k might be the equivalent of 35k in Georgia (no idea, just an example).

As for the experience thing, right out of college I got a job with a small web development company for 35k. After six months I had a review and a considerable raise. I stayed there for a year and then left after I had the experience I wanted. I'm looking for a new job again now, and even though the company I'm working for is folding, it seems like the job market is picking up again, in DC anyways.

thanks gray. I'm not trying to pry into anyone's life. I'm simply trying to get an idea of base salary ranges coming out of college. I knew that they would vary, but i just wanted to hear from people in the field. I don't want to see anyone's W2. I still don't quite understand why everyone is so uptight about how much they make, but to each his own i guess. I'm not exactly proud that i'm a yard and maintainance man while working through college, but i don't feel the need to hide it.

Believe it or not, I am trying to be helpful. Go use a search engine and look for technical salary surveys, because you're only wasting your time here. You havent received a figure yet, and I doubt you will.

Good point praxis, there are also Salary Survey's you can take depending on location and job title (don't think experience is usually taken into account though). That's prolly a good starting point too.

Oooh just had another idea, search www.monster.com you might find a few with salary ranges that would give you a good idea.
